  • Peaceful rural location with superb views near Llangernyw, North Wales
  • A 25-minute drive to Conwy Castle; Eryri National Park 30 minutes
  • Animals and free-range hens on site; pub and shop five minutes’ drive
A small and easygoing sort of place with spectacular views over the Eryri (Snowdonia) foothills, pop-up Glan Y Gors campsite near Abergele sits on a peaceful rural hilltop. It’s a few minutes' drive from the traditional Welsh village of Llangernyw, and very well placed for masses of things to do and see in North Wales. That is, of course, if you and the kids can ever stop gazing at all the cute animals sharing the five-acre smallholding with you. Pedigree Soay sheep and playful Pygmy goats are bred here, while happy free-range hens get busy laying fresh eggs for your breakfast – buy them from the honesty box. Dogs are welcome too on your Welsh sojourn (just keep them under control around the livestock please) and it’s a doodle to exercise them as footpaths lead directly from the camping field. If you are off out seeing the sights by day, do try to get back to home base on a clear night to see the colourful sunset and later lie back around the barbecues to take in the glittering night skies. With a basics shop and post office, Llangernyw village (five minutes’ drive) also offers up a friendly pub serving home-cooked food and real ales; it also has a takeaway service so you can have cosy suppers around the campfire.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Size of pitch
beautiful views
Spotless toilets and 1 shower

Disliked Told off for having bbq (with legs) on grass - legs of BBQ didn't even get hot

At least 7 or 8 miles of very narrow single track dangerous roads to get to/ from site. Once there I was frightened to drive car until we went home as didn't want to risk nightmare single track windy roads

Would not go back!!

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Beautiful peaceful and secluded site with gorgeous views of the hills and sunset. The owners are really lovely. The facilities were okay for a couple of nights. I would definitely come back.

Disliked The toilets could do with being cleaned a little more often. I’m not sure when they were, maybe I went at the worst times. It would also be good to have paper towels to dry hands on, but just minor things over all.

Powered grass RV campsite

Liked The view is beautiful . Rolling hills , lots of wildlife.

Hosts communicated well prior to arrival and helped us to book

Disliked Only 2 showers for the whole site (4 toilets)
Toilets/shower block are very old/ run down
Spiders sharing the showers with me!
No freezer/microwave
Site is so uneven that our tent was on a slope
Very windy and a lot cooler as position of site is high.
1st night it was so windy that our tent ripped . On other sites hosts have been present especially during bad weather but not here.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments. Just to clarify that we don't advertise a freezer or microwave or 24/7 presence in case of bad weather. There are only 10 pitches on the whole camp field so 4 toilets and 2 showers (3 years old) are more than adequate, well maintained and cleaned regularly. We state in our information that group bookings of 3 or more pitches are not permitted however you booked in a group of 4 pitches. We allowed this as a one off, allowing you to pitch together as a group. In return you left 2 large scorched areas on the grass from your barbecues, threw ashes away next to your pitches, left rubbish in the hedges and didn't recycle any of your copious amounts of rubbish.

Camping pod

Liked A lovely location within easy driving distance of beaches and towns. The pod was clean, comfortable and had the basic equipment included. Shower and toilet facilities were clean and adequate for the size of the site.

Disliked The only niggle we had was that when using the shower, the temperature and water pressure would drop instantaneously if someone flushed a loo or was washing up and it would take a minute or so to return to normal - a very uncomfortable experience, especially for younger children!

Local attractions

Pretty Llangernyw (five minutes’ drive) has an unusual whitewashed church and is well-known for the (circa) 5,000-year-old yew tree in the graveyard. Close by is the Sir Henry Jones Museum, laid out with period rooms and a shoemaker’s workshop in the whitewashed birthplace of the famous Welsh philosopher. Fancy ticking a few major attractions off the sightseeing list? Conwy Castle (25 minutes) is open for tours of the former royal apartments, while there are bracing walks and Irish Sea panoramas up the Great Orme in Llandudno (half an hour). Glittering sands await on the expansive Colwyn Bay beach (15 minutes), and there are gorgeous colourful (especially in spring and autumn) walks to be had at National Trust-owned Bodnant Garden (20 minutes). And of course, Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park (half an hour) is the scenic backdrop to many, many mountain hiking and biking adventures, and you can explore deep underground at the National Slate Museum (an hour) or zoom down high wires at Zip World Betws-y-Coed (25 minutes).
