  • Secluded shepherd's hut glamping among 120 acres of farmland
  • In the Brecon Beacons National Park, 10 minutes' drive from Hay-on-Wye
  • Handcrafted hut with kingsize bed, woodburner and ensuite bathroom
It’s a splendid and secluded glamping spot that’s tucked away between the hedgerows and woodlands at Hay Hideout Huts in the Black Mountains… and that’s without taking into consideration the rather fab 120 acres of farmland surrounding the site. This comfy and quiet Powys hut is in a remote, off-grid setting just below the Hay Bluff, up at the northern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park – and yes, that means some gorgeous views, looking out over the Wye Valley and Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes’ drive away). There are lots of local walks and bike routes to explore in the surroundings, and as there’s a Site of Special Scientific Interest next door you may well spot a fair bit of wildlife around and about (bats, badgers and muntjac deer are frequent visitors, and there are lots of intriguing plants and wildflowers around too). Come along here and you’ll be staying in a handcrafted off-grid hut with power generated by a solar panel (enough to run lighting, a radio, TV and USB port but dependent on the weather). Water is supplied by a natural spring, so it’s for shower and washing-up use only, but you’ll be provided with some drinking water too. Everything at this spot has been designed with peace and comfort in mind – the hut is parked up in a field of its own, so you’ll have plenty of quiet, and it’s been well kitted out with insulation and an ensuite bathroom (including a shower and flushing toilet). Inside there’s a kingsize bed, a woodburning stove and a kitchen corner with gas hob, sink, fridge and dining area (although there’s also space for dinner a deux outside if you’d like…)

Local attractions

What will you find in Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes’ drive)? Well, plenty of bookshops that’s for sure, as this place is home to an annual book festival, but there's also the splendid river Wye when you fancy taking a canoe or paddleboard out for a run. Llangorse Lake (half an hour) is another place with a boat load of opportunities for watersports – yes, literally, as there are rowing boats, paddleboards, kayaks, pedalos and Canadian canoes all ready for a captain to take the helms. Once you’ve mastered the water, it might be time to move onto some new heights. If so, set your sights on Pen y Fan (45 minutes), the highest peak in southern Britain, or more mountainous terrain around the town of Brecon (half an hour), which is rather lovely in itself. With castles such as Bronllys Castle (20 minutes) and Crickhowell Castle (40 minutes) or the cathedral city of Hereford (45 minutes) and the Victorian Brobury House Gardens (25 minutes) all other options for your afternoons out around here, you’re sure to have a well-rounded trip.
