Green Dragon Inn: Pitches on site

General

  • Well-maintained pub site on the border between England and Wales
  • In Buttington on the River Severn; four miles from Powis Castle
  • Live music on Friday nights and a weekend carvery; dogs welcome

Whether it’s castle spotting, hikes along Offa's Dyke or exploring natural beauty spots like the Shropshire Hills and Snowdonia National Park, the Green Dragon Inn will get you right on track. This warm and welcoming pub site in Powys is in the small village of Buttington on the river Severn, a few minutes' drive from the English border and it’s a fab place to top up your batteries before you get out…

Meals at the rural country pub are sorted by a varied pub menu, with hot food served between 12 noon and 9pm seven days a week. At weekends, there's a top-rated traditional carvery to get stuck into, with midweek specials and a range of lunches to keep your tastebuds content at other times. The pub plays host to regular live music sessions on Friday nights too.

Green Dragon Inn has a range of mixed hardstanding and grass pitches to choose from, plus access to free wifi, a washing-up area, baby changing facilities and a well-maintained bathroom block. This is a dog-friendly site close to lots of riverside and country walks, with visit-worthy local vistas including Admiral Rodney’s Pillar, Whitehouse Nature Reserve and Severn Farm Pond Nature Reserve (all a few minutes' drive from base). The Offa's Dyke trail is a few minutes' walk from the site, running along the river to the north and inland through the fields to the south.

Getting to the site should be nicely straightforward as it's just off the A478 – the trade-off for this is that there is a certain amount of road noise on the pitches.

Please note

No electric barbecues allowed.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No gas barbecues allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The bar is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

Lovely warm welcome from the owners. All the staff we talked to were very helpful and friendly and offered advice on what was in the local area and how to get taxis. You can see they have done a lot to improve the pub. Pitch size. Proximity to Welshpool. Handy little campsite next to a pub that serves food & drinks. There is a busy road runs near the site but it didn't stop us sleeping well. We didn't sample the food as we went into Welshpool and had to wait fr a taxi to get back so decided to eat in Welshpool instead. The pub was busy both Friday and Saturday night so the food must be good and they have a great selection of drinks at the bar.

    Disliked:

The toilets & showers are quite dated but were clean and worked well. They are looking to imprve these over the winter but at least they are available 24 hours a day unlike some pub campsites.

Excellent Pub on site. Good for one/two night stay. Convenient for a visit to Powis Castle. Which is highly recommended with beautiful gardens and scenery.

    Disliked:

Showers and toilets need a spruce up and a bit smelly. Dish washing facilities in shower block so no one can use if someone is in the shower. Close to main road with traffic noise. Hard to exit site due to volume of traffic.

Stayed the one night in our campervan
Site itself is level, well spaced, close to hook ups, clean and looked after.
Toilet facilities, yes are basic, but perfectly functional and clean.
    Recycling available.
We ate in the Pub in the evening, and found the place, friendly, warm and a good selection of local beers.
Foodwise....WOW ! All 4 of us had different dishes and each one was superb.
Cannot rate the Faggots highly enough, AND they are made in the Pub by the Landlord from locally sourced products (as is everything else).
Landlord & Landlady, very friendly and want to ensure you are happy with both stay and Pub. Food alone, would bring us back.....

    Disliked:

OK, yes, this site is right next to a busy A road, which we knew when we booked, and yes there is a lot of road noise, which does continue through the night, so just be aware.

Not a dislike, but just a tip, when leaving, its much easier to go out via the Pub car park, rather than the entrance you came in, as much easier to see.

From the manager...

Hi thank you for your feedback.

Yes we are located by a main road (google maps will show you that) but its easy access & simple parking and straight off the main road, you have easy access to Welshpool, Offers Dyke and Powys castle, 25 mins to shrewsbury & an hour to the beautiful Welsh coast.

We have a lovely Dog Friendly pub with great views we serve local beers and have a wonderful beer garden with a lovely secure children's play area.

We have a 70 seater restaurant open from 12 noon every day with a choice of menus from traditional Pub food which includes fresh Cod hand fried in local beer batter, local Welsh Sirloin Steaks, Hand made Welsh 8oz beefburgers topped with blue cheese to a specials menu with Tapas or Greek food.
comprehensive children's menu also available.

Sundays to us only mean one thing, We are the Hosts with the Roasts!
We offer Top side Beef, Lamb, Turkey, Pork, or nut roast. with all the trimmings including cauliflower cheese.

We have a large selection of gluten free choices & for vegetarian and vegan diets.

We also have an outside undercover seating area if you would like to eat or drink outside even when the weather is not great.

We have some lovely Glamping pods made from recycled water bottles from the sea!.

We renovated this beautiful 17th century inn when we purchased it in feb 2021 mostly by ourselves as trades people are difficult to find right now.

Yes our shower block is outdated but it was redecorated before the season and is cleaned twice a day, the hot shower works very well. ( winter 2021-2022 we plan a refit)

We have live music every weekend all year round.

We know we can not cater for everyone's tastes and understand that we don't get everything right every time but we try our very best to make sure everyone feels at home.

We are sorry that your not returning and would love to see you again but we do hope you find somewhere that is more suitable for yourselves.
Your Hosts Tommy & Shaz Gee.

Local attractions

What horizons to set your sights on first? Well, for those of you who have historical sites high up on your holiday to-do list, there are a few places to get started and Powis Castle (10 minutes' drive) is one of the closest out of the lot. This huge Welsh castle has some splendid garden terraces and walks in the grounds are a real treat…

For less walking and more chugging about, steam train trips go from the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway Preservation Company (10 minutes). To continue with your historic streak, The Wharf Powysland Museum (10 minutes) spills the beans on Montgomeryshire’s local history, while for ruins, Montgomery Castle (15 minutes) and the Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle (20 minutes) are some of your options.

Of course, activities-wise, walking is particularly fine around this area, especially in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes) and Snowdonia National Park (40 minutes) but the kids in your group could cheer on the pig races or meet the alpacas at Park Hall’s adventure farm (25 minutes). Meanwhile, the adults might prefer to go for a laidback game of golf at the Brookland Hall Golf Club (10 minutes).

Must see

  • Powis Castle & Garden (4.1 kilometers)
  • Stokesay Castle (32.9 kilometers)
  • Much Wenlock Priory (38.1 kilometers)

  • Carding Mill Valley and the Shropshire Hills (23.9 kilometers)
