  • Cabin in the grounds of a mansion 10 minutes’ drive from Montgomery
  • Powis Castle and Garden 25 minutes’ drive; Shrewsbury 45 minutes
  • Private hot tub and gas barbecue; shared space with play area
Whether you’re after a romantic getaway or an action-packed family holiday, the log cabin at Pentrenant Hall, in the grounds of a country house a 10-minute drive from the historic Welsh town of Montgomery, is a pretty sweet accommodation option. Accessed by a ladder, the loft, with its comfortable double bed, is great for a cwtch, while the hot tub on the decked area outside is the place to be on a clear night, as you stare up at the stars in the vast dark sky overhead. The kitchen comes with one electric cooking element and a microwave (plus kettle, toaster, fridge, crockery and assorted utensils), and a gas barbecue is also provided. However, if this is a romantic break, you might prefer to dine in the nearest pub, in the village of Sarn, a pleasant 45-minute walk (or a five-minute drive) along country lanes fringed by sheep-dotted fields and gentle hills. If you’re here as a family (and the kids are getting restless), you might be relieved to hear that shared spaces on the property include a play area and a games room. Splendid walking trails lace the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (25 minutes’ drive), or you can walk alongside the Montgomery Canal (accessed at Abermule, 20 minutes), spotting herons, swans and dragonflies. And if you’d like to linger on the banks of the canal, perhaps with a rod in hand, you can get a day ticket to fish for tench and pike.

Local attractions

This area of Wales is dotted with fortresses that used to protect the border from English attacks. Many of them are now in ruins, but that only adds to the dramatic effect. Check out 13th-century Dolforwyn Castle (20 minutes’ drive), hilltop Clun Castle (25 minutes) or Montgomery Castle, perched on a rocky plateau with far-reaching views. On the outskirts of Welshpool, Powis Castle and Garden (25 minutes) dates back from the 1200s, though it was renovated during the Elizabethan era and beyond. The building houses a renowned collection of decorative arts and South Asian objects, while the garden includes elegant terraces lined with statuary and yew trees. Sitting on a bend of the Severn, Shrewsbury (45 minutes) has the riverside Dingle Gardens, where you can hire a canoe or let the kids loose in the splash park; a 19th-century cathedral; and Shrewsbury Castle, home of the Soldiers of Shropshire Museum.
