  • Luxury glamping lodges on a family-owned Stirlingshire estate
  • Next to Ben More in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park
  • Fishing on site, plus boats or kayaks to borrow; games room and gym
If your holiday plan involves getting as much as you possibly can out of the spectacular Scottish scenery (while enjoying a fair dose of comfort into the bargain as well), then it’s likely you’ll be most pleased with the glamping setup at Portnellan Lodges. This glamping site is part of the Portnellan Estate, a family-owned property in the Stirlingshire countryside, with stunning views of the surrounding Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Ben More mountain is pretty much in the back garden here, and there are gorgeous loch and mountain views all around (best enjoyed from the verandah of your accommodation while nursing your morning coffee/evening aperitif). It’s likely that even a brief look at these views will make you keen to get out and about – and there are many ways to achieve that around here. The estate has rowing boats and kayaks to borrow (for free), paddleboards for hire and five miles of riverbank/lochside fishing for wild salmon and trout. You can also try your hand at clay pigeon shooting on site, or ask your host Lucy for top recommendations for local walks, bike rides, watersports and horse riding locations. All sound perhaps a little tiring? It’s good to know that all this activity can be followed up by some good downtime at your accommodation, which is served with a good dose of luxury (things like Egyptian cotton bed linen, cosy slippers, comfy sofas and indoor heating all coming as standard here). Each lodge has its own bathroom and well-equipped kitchen, and you can order Lucy’s ready meals for a tasty and easy evening meal. Still got a bit of energy left? The estate also has a games room (with pool table, table football and table tennis) and a small gym.

Local attractions

As well as the river and loch banks on site, there are a further 21 lochs within easy reach of Portnellan, plus access to Britain’s largest body of water in the form of Loch Lomond (40 minutes’ drive). That means plenty of opportunities for canoeing, paddleboarding, swims and other watersports (or just enjoying the views on a waterside walk…) Mountains are in good supply too, of course. The Ben More trailhead is about five minutes’ walk away, and easy access to the A85 also means you can get to Ben Lui (25 minutes’ drive), The Cobbler (half an hour) and Ben Vorlich (an hour) without too much trouble. For a somewhat easier day out, try a stroll around Ardkinglas Woodland Garden (45 minutes), visit Inveraray Castle (50 minutes) or treat yourselves to a scenic flight with Loch Lomond Seaplanes (50 minutes).
