  • Luxury geodesic domes on a farm a 20-minute drive from Stirling
  • Carron Reservoir 10 minutes’ drive; Glasgow 40 minutes
  • Ensuite bathroom; kitchenette; hot tub and sun loungers
Fancy a luxury break in the Scottish countryside, complete with long evening soaks in your private hot tub followed by a restful slumber in a super-kingsize bed? If you like the sound of all that, consider booking a spot at Drum Farm Hideaways, a peaceful site in the valley of the River Earl’s Burn, a 20-minute drive from Stirling. You’ll be staying in a spacious and impeccably appointed geodesic dome. The word ‘spacious’ is somewhat of an understatement here: these domes are large enough to accommodate your sleeping quarters, a living room area (with a sofa bed for the kids) and a kitchenette. There’s plenty of storage, too, plus a woodburner to stay toasty during those chilly Scottish evenings. Each dome also has its own ensuite bathroom with a large walk-in shower. And wait – there’s more: besides spectacular views over the surrounding hills, your private outdoor seating area comes with that bubbling hot tub mentioned earlier, a barbecue area and a couple of loungers that make it easy-peasy to stargaze without straining your neck – bliss. It might be difficult to tear yourself away from your dome and its facilities, but the local area has plenty of attractions to make it worth your while, starting with the Carron Valley Forest, just over half a mile away, and the Carron Reservoir (10 minutes’ drive), with its hiking and biking trails. For a more challenging trek, follow the river (or walk along the reservoir, then head north-east) all the way to the Earls Burn Waterfall.

Local attractions

On a hill overlooking the Carron Reservoir, Duncarron Medieval Village (five minutes’ drive) is the place to learn about Scotland’s history while being entertained by knowledgeable costumed guides. The place holds many events throughout the year, from serene basket-weaving workshops to raucous fighting sessions inspired by the TV show ‘Outlander’, parts of which were filmed here. Stirling Castle (20 minutes) sits on a rocky crag above the town. Its lavish interiors include the humongous Great Hall, the Royal Palace (where Mary Queen of Scots grew up) and the Chapel Royal, with its delicate frescoes. The Stirling Smith Art Gallery & Museum illustrates local military and sporting history, as well as housing a collection of tartans. Spend a day in Glasgow (40 minutes), where the Glasgow Science Centre on the River Clyde features hands-on exhibitions and a planetarium. Take a stroll in Kelvingrove Park (if you’re lucky, you might catch a music concert at the bandstand), or check out the splendid halls of the Hunterian Art Gallery.
