  • Dog-friendly camping pods site in Lothian
  • A 35-minute drive from Edinburgh and Peebles, with cycling nearby
  • Restaurants, shops and takeaways a 35-minute walk from the site
Planning your big escape to the wilds outside of Edinburgh? Those who like their breaks to include a generous dose of comfort will find that this spot that very much fits the bill. Gorebridge Cabin Camping isn’t your typical touch down in a tent kind of stay. Instead, the hideouts of choice are camping pods – Escape Pods, the site calls them – in a gorgeous woodland setting in the Lothian region. It's a 35-minute drive to get to Scotland's hilly capital, where there are scores of historical sites to see: the hilltop castle, the medieval old town, Scotland’s crown jewels, Royal Yacht Brittanie and so on… Except, you might be quite preoccupied with the surrounding Lothian landscapes, hiking or cycling your way around. The site’s dog-friendly, so your canine might join you on those aforementioned adventures. With free private parking on site, setting off for Scottish sights is no trouble at all. If it’s just a stroll and some tasty local eats you have in mind one afternoon, however, the centre of Gorebridge is only a 35-minute stroll from the pods. The former mining village has pubs, pizza and fish and chip takeaways, shops and all the other usuals, as well as a train station. Pretty Peebles might catch your eye too, with the gorgeous river Tweed, cafés, artsy shops and riverside walks based 35 minutes’ drive away from Gorebridge Cabin Camping. Edinburgh Airport is half an hour’s drive away too.

Local attractions

Staying in a former mining village might have already piqued your interest in Scotland’s mining history. Handily enough, you won’t be left wondering for too long, with the National Mining Museum Scotland (five minutes’ drive) so close by. It’s an interactive experience too, with tour guides in the form of ex-miners to take you down underground. Sometimes you just want a little of the sea too – and if so, you could bike from the city of Edinburgh to Portobello Beach (25 minutes) or take refuge in the little mining seaside town of Prestonpans (25 minutes). If you’re after something a little challenging muscle-wise, the Pentland Hills Regional Park (20 minutes) is right on hand with 100 kilometres of hiking and cycling trails in the hills over Edinburgh. Just see whether your legs are up to the challenge after climbing Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh itself…
