  • Nearly-wild camping with stunning views across Loch Scresort
  • A 10-minute walk to the ferry port and a shop
  • Views across the bay; beaches within walking distance
When it comes to the wild, the Isle of Rum is pretty high up there. Hugging the shore of Loch Scresort, the only village on the island of Rum, this dog-friendly site rests on a pretty isle made up of a national nature reserve, making it a great choice to take a break in nature. This is a car-free island, but there's no shortage of sublime beaches and hiking trails nearby, so you’ll have plenty of chances to spot the local wildlife or just lay back on site and look out over to Skye in the distance. Plus, 10 minutes’ walk from the ferry port and an hour and 25 minutes’ ferry from Mallaig, you can head over there to board the steam railway in the so-called ‘road to the isles’. Facilities at the site include two communal barbecues (charcoal not included) and an indoor shelter for birdwatching or sheltering from the weather. There are also two showers, two sinks by the sea and access to a hot-water tap. You’ll certainly need a trusty store of snacks with so many nature trails nearby. Handily, there’s a small shop within 10 minutes’ walk which also sells hot soup and chips every day.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Scenic location pitching on grass at the edge of the shore looking out over the bay and beyond. The wooden hut, and the new composting toilets are excellent additions. Great base for walking the Cullins or exploring others areas. The showers weren't working well and we appreciated access into the bunkhouse to use these showers which were great.

Disliked Be prepared for midges in the summer months. It would be good to have recycling bins. The new outdoor cooking area out the back is a nice thought but its a midge trap and an open structure with roof would have been more effective.

Liked Everything. Gorgeous location, great facilities, warm welcome, loved the campsite sinks with a view and the dry room was FANTASTIC and made what could have been a rather soggy camp a delight.

Disliked Did not stay long enough.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Beautiful site to pitch up on overlooking the bay. Really well sheltered spot so not much wind. Camping showers were broken so they allowed campers to use the bunkhouse showers which was super generous.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Fabulous location very close to the ferry terminal, great facilities- with warm/ hot showers close by & fresh water access on the site, the ground can be moist the closer you get to the waters edge if there has been rain about, but was fine for me @ the end of April, I had fabulous weather & pitched in a fine location on top of the loch 👌

Disliked There is nothing to dislike! If you find you dislike something you are in the wrong location 😃👌

Still a delightful place to camp, especially when midges not out yet.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Peace, perfect composting toilets, birdsong, swimming right in front of campsite, washing up facilities and cook shed if required.

Disliked Pity you can't pay a small day rate to sit in the bunkhouse of an evening during midge season. That could be a moneyspinner for Community Trust.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked This is wild camping with a tap. Beautiful views towards Skye, incredibly peaceful, even the bees sound noisy. Facilities are minimal but seems to suit the wild, rugged beauty of the island. Island shop/post office is excellent, I brought too much food anticipating limited supply but this was not the case.

Local attractions

To see where wildlife and otters hide out, there’s a hide just 15 minutes’ walk away, or more nature living it up around the North Side Trail (five minutes to the start point). Some sturdy shoes or hiking boots are a must here, of course, as without the cars, you’ll be hunting down the island’s hot spots on foot. Some such places include the Kinloch Glen waterfall (45 minutes), the sandy beach and dunes at Kilmory Bay (an hour and a half) and the more rugged stretch of coast at Harris (two hours and 10 minutes’ walk) with rather lovely views over Coll and Tirree. It may be a way to go, but Dibidil Bothby (two hours and 10 minutes) is well worth the trip. It’s a little mountain cabin way up in the hills, with nothing but the landscapes (and perhaps some hairy Highland cattle) as an accompaniment.
