Great Glen Yurts: Wildflowers in the grass

General

  • Peaceful dog-friendly glamping site at the foot of Ben Nevis
  • A five-minute drive to mountain biking trails in the Nevis Range
  • Access to a salmon fishing river; Fort William 10 minutes' drive

Mountain biking in the Nevis Mountain range and sleeping at the foot of Ben Nevis? Oh, go on then… Great Glen Yurts is a glamping site where you don’t have to compromise on comfort (or sort out bringing and putting up your own camping equipment, for that matter).

At the foot of Ben Nevis, just five minutes’ drive from the mountain biking trails at the Nevis Range Mountain Resort, this is a right spot for outdoor adventures in the Highlands and Islands. Dedicate your days to climbing and walking the north face of Ben Nevis or messing around in the nearby mountain bikers' playground, which has trails for all abilities, including a family-friendly downhill trail.

If you want to switch up the slopes for the water, Fort William is 10 minutes’ drive away. The town has shops, restaurants and a cinema if you’re planning a lazier day or only setting out to gather supplies. There are plenty of local companies who run watersports like sea kayaking, white water rafting, canyoning and paddleboarding around the Highlands and Islands. The gorgeous family farm on which you’ll be based also borders a salmon fishing river with great swimming spots a short walk away.

With facilities like a communal shower and a toilet block with plenty of hot water (bring your own towels), things are nice and cosy at Great Glen Yurts. There’s a communal barrel barbecue (bring your own charcoal) and a firepit in the middle of the field (no firewood is provided, so you’ll get to scavenge for your own in the woods). Dogs are very welcome too, just as long as they’re kept on a lead near livestock.

All the properties are furnished with a comfy double bed with fluffy feather duvets and pillows, sheepskin rugs, lanterns and a woodburning stove (firewood is provided for this one). Handily, they also have their own personal open-air kitchen handcrafted from trees grown on the farm. This includes gas rings, a toaster, kettle, fridge, pots, pans, plates, and utensils. Please note that while linen is provided for the double bed, you will need to bring sleeping bags for additional guests.

Please note

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The park caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The yurt was very cosy and so well put together! We loved the wood burner and all of the beds were comfy and clean. Was such a relaxing base to return to after a long day enjoying the mountains and lochs. The staff were so kind and friendly! The view of Ben Nevis from the yurt was incredible, and we loved being able to spot the yurt as we climbed up the mountain.

What a gem of a place. The location is stunning. The views are out of this world. Waking up to Ben Nevis each morning was such a treat.
Perfect place for watching the stars.
Lovely walks in the forest behind the site; watched red dear literally only steps in front of us. Brilliant for birdwatching and nature in all its glory.
All the local people were very friendly and we felt most welcome everywhere we went.
There is so much to do in the area and it is an absolute paradise for people who love the outdoors.
Thoroughly recommend the gondola up the mountain adjacent to Ben Nevis.
The kitchen facilities were brilliantand the bathrooms were very clean and the showers really warm.
We do not drive and I would say you really need to in this part of the world.
We had an amazing stay at Great Glen Yurts.

We had our first experience of dogs not being allowed on buses.
City link to not allow dogs; however Shiel bus service does. This did not distract from our enjoyment and we got taxis instead. Lovely local taxi drivers who were very engaging.

We loved everything about our stay at Great Glen Yurts! When we arrived we were blown away by the views, beautiful. Then when we saw our Yurt we were in love, it was perfectly sized for us! We’re a family of 5, so myself and husband had the double bed, our 2 girls had the bunk beds and then the little one had the pull out bed. Plenty of space! As the evenings drew in it got a bit chilly as the weather wasn’t the best for us, so we popped the log burner on….15 mins of that roaring away and we were all toasty! The personal kitchen area for each yurt is a great touch, there was everything we needed with regard to cutlery and pots and pans etc and the picnic benches were a lovely setting for eating at. The facilities were cleaned every day which was perfect. The area around the site was lovely, there’s a little stream where the kids loved playing in. You are about 10 mins drive from Fort William where there’s loads of supermarkets and things so you can get your food supplies for the stay. Definitely would love to stay again.

Brilliant location. The individual kitchen is a huge perk, and the shepherd’s hut is a great place to sleep. The log burner and fire wood makes the whole set-up perfect for getting about the highlands, and recharging overnight. The whole atmosphere is very relaxed. There are only four pitches so zero chance of overcrowding. Look no further - it’s brilliant.

The site was quiet with beautiful views. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of space in the yurt. The kitchen was also spacious and well equipped. Great location to access local tourist destinations.

    Disliked:

Not enough bedding was provided for extra guests, had to borrow from friends yurt. Futons were not very comfortable. Carbon monoxide detector went off in the middle of the night and incorrect replacement batteries provided. Mouse accessed kitchen and yurt.

From the manager...

Many thanks for your review. As you will have noted when making your booking linen is provided for the double bed and as you are able to book extra bedding at a small cost. You are also welcome to request extra bedding and linen if needed on arrival. We apologise for the carbon monoxide batteries. As the kitchen is an outdoor space, open to nature (including insects, birds and mice) we advise keeping it in the fridge or in the plastic food boxes provided.

Local attractions

To Fort William (10 minutes’ drive), first and foremost? There are watersports, wildlife spotting boat trips and access to the Great Glen Way, which runs for 79 miles past lochs, canals and mountains.

Those who fancy a strong alcoholic tipple after all of that can head to the Ben Nevis Distillery (five minutes), where there are tours involving tastings of the popular Ben Nevis malt whiskies.

The stunning coastline (and access to the Inner Hebrides) begins from around 45 minutes’ drive of the site. Glencoe is another hot spot for watersports. Set your sights on sea kayaking on Loch Leven or get in some munro bagging in the surrounding mountains. The glen landscapes are indeed scenic.
