  • Family-friendly site in with direct access to a private beach
  • A quarter of an hour to Kirkcudbright or Newton Stewart by car
  • Direct access to the South West Coastal 300 route
Folk come to the coast of Dumfries and Galloway for the peace and quiet, the castles and – if you opt for this particular spot just off the A75 – for access to a private sandy beach. Newton Campsite is a family-friendly site in a rural location with direct access to Scotland's southern seascapes and the scenic South West Coastal 300 driving route, all in a convenient location 15 minutes' drive from the popular towns of Kirkcudbright and Newton Stewart. The site is surrounded by fields and the pitches are just a short walk from the beach, where you can relax over a picnic or bring a kayak, bodyboard or wee sailboat and make your own oceangoing adventures. In the evening, head back to base to build a small fire in the designated spots, or bring your own firepit and spend the night enjoying sizzling snacks and gazing up at the stars. Newton Campsite has basic facilities only, including a waste-disposal point for toilet waste and a tap for fresh drinking water. Because of this, you'll need to bring your own toilet facilities (and all guests staying in tents are asked to bring their own toilet tent). The nearest set of shops is about four miles away, while Newton Stewart is where to head for bigger supermarkets and restaurants.

Primitive grass and sand travel trailer campsite

Liked Location was stunning, beautiful scenery and views, a great start to our holiday, a nice atmosphere.

Disliked Unfortunately it was very noisy until very late, don't mind too much but it went on a bit. The level of the land is very sloped, you must get their early to get a nice flat pitch. Would be fab with facilities, even very basic ones but we knew what we were getting and the price does reflect this. I called the number on arrival to get no answer but eventually the owner came out of the property at the gate, Pitchup needs updating to say you can go knock on the door.

Primitive grass and sand tent campsite

Liked The views, the private beach, the spacious plots. The quietness, cleanliness and peacefulness. Access to clean water. There is a portaloo on site. The location is perfect for exploring. The shallowness of the beach means it’s a perfect spot for paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming and allowing children to play safely!

Disliked Nothing. Another portaloo would be fab!

Primitive grass and sand tent campsite

Liked This campsite is stunning, chilled out vibe, stunning views of the sea and beach and at the other side hills, endless fun I have a 13 year old and not once did he say he was bored and his phone died in the first day, we fished for hours and caught crabs, spent nights toasting marshmallows on the fire pit watching the moon come up over the sea.

Primitive grass and sand tent campsite

Liked As brilliant as last time. The location is superb... so relaxing, so peaceful. The site is basic but if a freshly cut pitch and the perfect view floats your boat, this is the place for you!

Disliked Can't say I disliked anything... even the portaloo had loo roll and hand sanitiser well stocked. Maybe a small shower block and bathroom would improve the site if you're tenting it but it's cheep and very cheerful so I can't complain. Would certainly recommend.

Primitive grass and sand tent campsite

Liked The location was fantastic. The customer service was great, very accommodating and happy to help. Despite the campsite being advertised as having no toilets, there was a portaloo which was clean, well stocked with loo roll and hand sanitiser. It was fully booked but still didn't feel too busy. Ample space dotted about. Great recycled fire pits for us to borrow too, nice touch. We really enjoyed our stay and we will certainly be back. Thank you.

Disliked A small toilet block and washing facilities would have been great as we stayed in basic tents, but we only stayed a couple of nights so we were more than happy to make do.

Primitive grass and sand travel trailer campsite

Liked This site is pretty much on a beach and the views are lovely! 2nd time staying on this site as we stayed for a night last year aswel.
Unfortunately the weather wasn’t on our side this year and it rained pretty much the whole stay but still managed to have a walk on the beach.
It says no toilets but there is 1 portable toilet on the site. Bargain price as well for the views you get!

Disliked Won’t rate down for this as not the owners fault but there was a group of 6 young people on the site and they were very noisy. Had loud music on etc all evening which was a bit annoying

Local attractions

In the immediate vicinity, you could explore mysterious ancient history at Cairn Holy (five minutes' drive), a set of Neolithic chambered tombs. If you're minded to range far and wide you might also like a spin around the 7Stanes bike park in Dalbeattie (30 minutes). One of the closest castles is at Cardoness (five minutes) in a hilltop location where you can take in far-reaching views, while down by the coast Carsluith Castle (10 minutes) is very well preserved and free to enter. More history and heritage is showcased in Kirkcudbright (15 minutes; pronounced kirk-oo-bree), including Broughton House, a restored Georgian mansion. The town also has a swimming pool for those months when the sea's a bit too chilly for a dip. Newton Campsite is also within easy reach of pretty coastal peninsulas like Isle of Whithorn (40 minutes), a pretty coastal village long associated with St Ninian, who brought Christianity to Scotland. The Rhins of Galloway peninsula (45 minutes) is also well worth a visit if you fancy visiting green spaces like Logan Botanic Garden (an hour) or the southernmost point in Scotland, the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse (an hour and 10 minutes).
