  • Glamping pods with River Tweed views on a peaceful Borders estate
  • Berwick-upon-Tweed 10 minutes’ drive and Holy Island half an hour
  • Fully equipped kitchens and ensuite bathrooms; pub 10 minutes’ walk
Set on a country estate in the Borders, Tweedbraes Glamping at Paxton House is surrounded by 80 gorgeous acres of Berwickshire woodland, Tweed riverside and parkland. Paxton House itself was built in Palladian style in 1763 – it’s right on the border with England so if the mood takes you, you can easily explore two countries on one holiday. Each wooden glamping pod has an open-plan kitchen/dining/living area with a sofa and TV, table and chairs, a double bed and kitchen corner equipped with all you need to rustle up your own meals, from an oven and fridge to cutlery, crockery and glasses. There’s also a wet room with a shower and heated towel rail at the rear of each pod, along with a second bedroom with single bunk beds. Outside is a private verandah, a small enclosed lawn and picnic bench, all looking over woodland to the River Tweed. A single parking space and a bike rack complete the roster of private facilities. Communal amenities include a playpark and den-building area as well as plenty of peaceful walks. The on-site tearoom, shop and main house are open daily from 10am–4pm between April and October, while there is a welcoming pub 10 minutes’ stroll away in Paxton village.

Liked We had a wonderful stay. The pod was warm and comfortable; well equipped with necessities and very private. Location was really good with some picturesque spots around. Edinburgh is in a drivable distance. Loved our stay and would definitely think of coming back .

1 bedroom camping pod (no pets)

Liked I absolutely loved my weekend in the pod, stayed with my brother & 2 grandchildren. Pod is well laid out with everything that you need. We had a lovely walk down to the river. We threw a few stones in and came back by the play park. No internet, but that didn’t matter at all. Look forward to next time

1 bedroom camping pod (no pets)

Liked The pod was beautifully decorated, well set out and it a great location. Something for all the family (liked there was cutlery and plates etc for babies/toddlers). Very quiet, lovely walks around the grounds and river, and great that the park is so close. The Tearoom serves breakfast and lunch, and had some delicious options. We didn't enter the house but the grounds are beautiful. The pod is very cosy, with everything you need.

Disliked The pod area is still under development but this doesn't take away the beauty of its location. Some little teething problems to sort out but would definitely come back especially as the area becomes more established.

Local attractions

As well as having all the essentials like supermarkets, shops and restaurants, Berwick-upon-Tweed (10 minutes’ drive over the border in England) is the springboard to coastal walks and bike rides, sea fishing or fly fishing for salmon and trout (in season) along the River Tweed. The town also has Elizabethan walls to walk, and beaches aplenty for balmier days. If you’d like to dip further into Northumberland, landmark Bamburgh Castle (half an hour) is open for tours of its vast apartments, and there’s a spectacular beach at its foot. Check tide times before crossing the causeway to Holy Island (half an hour) to explore the medieval priory and castle redesigned by Sir Edwin Lutyens in the early 20th century. Wonderfully family-friendly Alnwick Castle (40 minutes) offers a poison garden, Harry Potter film locations and a vast kids’ playground. Back in Scotland, cute-as-anything local towns and villages include Eyemouth (20 minutes), with a lively fishing harbour and sandy beach; Duns (also 20 minutes), where you can discover the fine interiors of elegant Edwardian Manderston House; and St Abbs (25 minutes), where thousands of seabirds nest on the cliffs at St Abb’s Head National Nature Reserve.
