  • Touring pitches among four acres of mature woods in Royal Deeside
  • Within the Cairngorms National Park; 20 mins' drive to Balmoral Castle
  • Backing Dinnet Wood and bordering the River Dee; dogs welcome
Now here’s a place that’s fit for royalty… Firbank Park is in gorgeous Royal Deeside, where monarchs have sought rural peace and quiet for generations. The accommodation at this Aberdeenshire park is a little different in style from that of nearby Balmoral Castle, 20 minutes’ drive away, but the touring pitches make a fine place to stay indeed. They’re generously spaced out among four acres of mature Douglas fir, Scotch pine and oak trees. Each one has an electric hookup and fresh water source, and you’ll also have access to grey waste and chemical disposal on site, as well as a recycling area and a toilet. These pitches are also a fabulous place for getting out to explore the splendid Scottish countryside – they’re just on the eastern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, with easy access to all sorts of walks, bike trails and munros to climb. The River Dee is a couple of minutes’ walk away for fishing, and there’s horse riding 10 minutes’ drive away at the Glen Tanar Estate. Alternatively, you could simply stick around on site and soak up the situation – Dinnet Wood, one of the oldest oak woods in Scotland, runs behind the site and you may well spot wildlife such as red squirrels, badgers, roe deer and buzzards passing by (please note this also means you’ll need to keep dogs on a lead). Barbecues are welcome on site, and you should be able to pick up supplies at the shops in the villages of Aboyne or Ballater, both of which are about 10 minutes’ drive away – and which also have restaurants, cafés and takeaways for those times when you’d rather someone else did the cooking.

Liked: We loved the beautiful grounds and facilities at Firbank Park! Justine and Archie were fabulous hosts - very welcoming and helpful with local recommendations and tips. Loved the heated toilet room when the snow started to fall too - nothing worse than a frozen bottom! Our children played in the snow for two days, making snowmen and rolling countless snowballs. Loved the open space and gorgeous surroundings. We’ll definitely be back when we’re next in Scotland!

Liked: Peaceful and quiet site.

Disliked: Super expensive.

From the manager: Thankyou for the time for leaving a review. I'm sorry you felt we were expensive. The pitch you were on covers a 1/3 of an acre and I suppose we could have packed in many more pitches in our field to reduce the cost of one nights stay but we feel most of our guest appreciate the space. It's true we don't have showers or a restaurant or bar but we are trying to appeal to customers that love the countryside and the walks/cycle tracks direct from our site.

Nerys C. The reviewer booked through Pitchup.com

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Generously spaced pitches, well kept grounds and beautiful surroundings.

Disliked: Liked everything for a short break but the addition of a shower and pot wash would enhance it and make slightly longer stays better. Don’t like using the shower in our vehicle and doing big dishes is tricky in our tiny sink!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your review Nerys. We are always looking for ways to improve Firbank Park so many thanks for your suggestions.

Local attractions

Ballater (10 minutes’ drive) is a place where you’re bound to stop sooner or later – you’ll most likely be purchasing from shops that proudly display their Royal Warrant, but it’s also worth leaving a bit of time to visit the Old Royal Station, climb Craigendarroch Hill and play a round at Ballater Golf Club. Balmoral Castle (20 minutes) was famously the favourite residence of Queen Elizabeth II, and you’ll be able to find out why when you pay a visit – either taking a guided tour of the house or strolling around the grounds depending on the season. Heading out into the Cairngorms National Park is a must too, whether you’re planning adventures like a climb of nearby Ben Macdui or more gentle strolls looking out for Highland cows. Either way, you can finish off your day of activity with a few sips of something from Royal Lochnagar Distillery (25 minutes).
