  • Small, quiet site on a working farm in the County Down drumlins
  • A 10-minute drive to Drumkeeragh Forest; half an hour to Belfast
  • Honesty shop; restaurants in Ballynahinch, 15 minutes’ drive away
Looking for some quiet time somewhere close to forests, beaches and the city? Boy, you’re in for a treat at Brook Cottage Camping in the rolling County Down drumlins. It’s just a 10-minute drive from Drumkeeragh Forest (where there are some excellent walks and views, please and thank you) and half an hour from Belfast (yes, you’re not far from the capital of Northern Ireland, no less). The small, family-friendly site is a pop-up place up on a working farm with portable toilet access and a washing-up area. It’s on a minor road, so there shouldn’t be too much traffic noise. The road is handy for coming and going, especially if you want to make a clean sweep of some of the top attractions in Northern Ireland. Sling your fishing rods over your shoulders and set off to a local fishing spot – there are lakes within 15 minutes’ drive of the site – or go to gather your supplies from the market town of Ballynahinch. It has all the usual shops and restaurants you’d expect from such a spot. Not that you'll need them for basic supplies; there's an honesty box shop back on site with gas canisters, basic foods and other camping essentials, as well as the site's own free-range eggs. A 20-minute car ride through Dromara and Finnis is all it takes to reach Slieve Croob, the source of the river Lagan. After your climb, expect views for miles. And if you fancy a dip and some classic entertainment after your time spent outdoors, Lisburn (25 minutes' drive) has a swimming pool with water slides, a cinema and a bowling venue.

What customers say

This charming, quiet farm site gets kudos for its friendly owner, peaceful vibes, and great value. Guests loved the extra kitchen amenities and flat pitches. It's a bit rustic with basic washrooms (no showers yet, but a new block is coming). A solid base for exploring!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked A quiet place in the country to pitch a tent.

Disliked I drove past the campsite without seeing any clear indication that I had indeed arrived at the right place and it took me a while to get back. The little signposting there is is really not visible enough.

From the manager: Glad to hear you enjoyed the quiet surroundings but we're sorry you didn't see our sign. It is as big as we're allowed.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked A great central location from which to travel across Northern Ireland. The owner was friendly and the facilities were as per the description.

Disliked The place will really benefit from the new toilet and shower block that are in progress, staying for longer than a night or two is difficult with no shower! A few hook up points would be great too instead of using a shared socket.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Everything i like about farm sites: informal, friendly, small, and fair value. Look elsewhere for hook up, hardstand, disposal etc- this is off-grid. Rural & peaceful. I got into Belfast by bike & good bus service nonetheless.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely little spot in the Down countryside. Rural, yet easy to get to from Belfast, Lisburn, etc. Handy spot to use as a base for Downpatrick, Newcastle, Seaforde and many other places to visit. Friendly owner providing basic kitchen and toilet facilities. Highly recommended for car camping, camper vans, tent camping etc. Not too many spots, so it won't get too busy or crowded.

Disliked It's a working farm location, so there can be a bit of noise at night-times, but no big deal.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We came here for the first time last year, and my girls 10 & 11 had such a great time they wanted to come again, so we did last weekend. Perfect spot, have everything there you need apart from shower. The owner is such a lovely person too, very helpful ☺️.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Location was easy to get too

Disliked The ground wasnt soft for the tent pegs, the toilet facilities were unkept over flowing bin and not toilet roll with a strong smelly of urine. The farmer liked to remind that it was private property and you couldnt walk about the area. Arrived and there was no fire pit went and got my own and the wood was taken from me when i have popped out for the afternoon. Operational farm meaning machinary/tractor was in and out to 12am

From the manager: Sorry but we cannot agree with anything you have raised.
Our toilets are regularly checked and provided with air fresheners although sometimes toilet roll does run out , a simple ask for more would have been easy. You asked about seeing livestock on the farm and I simply asked that campers don't go over the fields as cattle are easily spooked and the sheep were grazing down the road. The campers arrived mid day and didn't indicate any desire for the firepit immediately, this would have been taken to them in the early evening along with firewoodand kindling. The wood you mention was waste timber taken from a bag in the farmyard despite a notice in the kitchen area indicating that that area is private. When asked the following morning if all was good and if they had had a good time the answer was "yes". Perhaps it would have been wiser to have aired any issues with us before slating us in a vindictive review with false information

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Loved the fact that this was on a farm. Had the opportunity to see them shear the sheets wool, which was fascinating. It's in a nice rural location. The farmer / owner was very friendly and helpful. It was possible to use their fire pits on condition of buying their logs - I fully understand the reason for this. Good value for money.

Disliked Not so much a dislike but you have to take this campsite for what it is - a small field with minimal facilities. Fully declared on the website, this is a pop up campsite with no showers or electricity. There is a basic toilet in a shed / lean to which was more DIY rather than commercial standard. Similarly there was an open kitchen area.

Local attractions

What’s there to do in Belfast (half an hour's drive)? Plenty, it turns out. After all, Northern Ireland’s capital is where the Titanic was created, so there’s a museum dedicated to its rise and fall in the dockyards. Get a taste of life behind bars at the city’s Crumlin Road Gaol Visitor Attraction and Conference Centre too, which is a prison that closed in 1996. Already a pro at kayaking or knee boarding or looking to give it a go) Let's Go Hydro (25 minutes) runs watersports and an aqua park. If that gives you a taste for some water action, one of the nearest coastal spots is Newcastle (25 minutes). It has all the classic seaside amusements and backs onto forests and mountains. There’s a woodland, lake, garden and history trail around the Montalto Estate (15 minutes), so get your picnic blankets at the ready for a peaceful afternoon on the old estate built in the 1700s.
