  • Flat and grassy five-acre site deep in the Somerset Levels
  • A 15-minute drive from Taunton; Barrington Court 20 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with easy access from the A378
As you'd expect from a site with such a name, there's a whole lot of space in which to relax and explore at 5 Acres, a large grassy site in the Somerset Levels. Kids and dogs are both welcome on site here, and there's plenty of scope for them to run about and play games safely away from barbecues and campfires (which are also permitted to keep you warm and fed in the evenings). Facilities on site include firepits, a toilet and shower block and outdoor sinks with mains water. The surrounding Somerset Levels aren’t just out in the sticks – they also produce them. Willow cane has been cultivated the traditional way in this part of the county for hundreds of years and can be seen growing within a mile of 5 Acres. The Levels are also a wildlife haven, making them an all-round top choice for country walks along the many trails nearby. And while this may be a rural retreat, it's also one that's easy to get to as it's just off the A378 (no winding country lanes to negotiate for this one…) Taunton town centre, with its wide range of shops and supermarkets, is a 15-minute drive away. The closest pub and coffee shop are five minutes away by road.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Dog friendly, huge pitches, fire pits on every pitch and outdoor sinks with recycling and bins. Great views and walks from the camp site. We were lucky to be the only ones at the campsite so we had private facilities. Good communication with owners. A lovely close to nature campsite with good facilities.

Disliked: No hot water or covered area for dishwashing. No lights in the toilets so bring a torch. Although the campsite has CCTV, we felt a bit exposed (especially as we were the only ones there) as anyone could get onto the site.

Hobbit house microlodge

Liked: Absolutely loved this little gem. The habit hut was so warm and cosy, bedding, Wood and kitchen items were all provided. It was clear the owners must have stayed or used the hut themselves as its layout just made sense.

Disliked: Everything was perfect.

Hobbit house microlodge

Liked: Amazing stay at 5 acres in the hobbit hut. We absolutely loved our time here. Staying at the hobbit hut you'll find a large private garden separate from the main site. This garden leads you to the hut, toilet and shelter. The shelter is beautifully crafted and helped us stay cheerful even when the rain came in. Having the firepit underneath it really gives it a cozy feeling. The hut is cozy and surprisingly spacious depending on how many bags you bring. The outdoor kitchen under the shelter has everything you could need, plates, bowls, cutlery, pans for the fire tripod, pans for the gas hob, utensils for cooking. Really great for travelling light. Having the separate flushing toilet nearby is useful too, avoids having to walk all the way out of the private garden and across main site in the middle of the night! Would highly recommend this site. The owners Sarah and Theo were amazing and greeted us on arrival to show us where to park and tell us about the site.

Hobbit house microlodge

Liked: We had the pleasure of staying in the Hobbit house at 5 acres. This place is truly magical! From the moment we arrived we were greeted by Sarah and her husband who welcomed us and showed us around their beautiful garden. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. The hobbit house itself is like nowhere we’ve stayed before! It’s the perfect blend between being quiet and secluded, whilst also feeling very homely and safe. You have your own very large private garden to explore, with an area to watch the sunset, as well as a beautiful water feature to relax by. Everything is very clean, the bed is comfortable, you have a covered outside area which provides shade in the heat and also plenty of room to keep you dry if it’s raining. A nice sized fire pit to cook on, as well as a gas stove if you’re not feeling too old school. The only thing I was worried about was having a shared shower facility, but the showers are all very clean and high quality, and hot water all the time. So absolutely no issues whatsoever. We didn’t need the log burner in the house as the weather was lovely but we will love to come back during the colder season as I’m sure that will make it even more Cosy and homely! We will certainly be coming back to stay again!

Local attractions

First time in the West Country? Get your bearings at the Museum of Somerset (15 minutes' drive), a family-friendly local history exhibit housed in the grand surrounds of Taunton Castle. Other history-infused haunts, like National Trust-managed Barrington Court (20 minutes) and Coleridge's Cottage (40 minutes), are also pretty sure to help you get a feel for the place. Already a maven in all things southwestern? Skip the history lesson and get straight out for rambles in the Quantock Hills (20 minutes). The coast is also within range, whether you opt to head north to the Bristol Channel for swims at Kilve beach (40 minutes) or a trip to Watchet arcade (40 minutes) or south to Lyme Regis (45 minutes) on Dorset's Jurassic Coast. If you're looking to branch out from your common and garden holiday attractions, take a closer look at the traditional willow products on display at Coates English Willow Visitor Centre (10 minutes). More local produce can be inspected (and tasted) at promisingly named Sheppy's House of Cider (15 minutes), a well-established Somerset firm where you can analyse dry, medium and sweet varieties.
