  • Off-grid Somerset farm campsite with spectacular Bristol Channel views
  • A 10-minute drive to Cheddar Gorge; 25 minutes to Weston-super-Mare
  • Grass pitches with basic facilities; five minutes’ walk to the pub
A working Somerset farm. Bristol Channel views. Back-to-basics family camping. Sounds like what you’re looking for? Here at Swallow Barn Farm, there's also a traditional country pub (with plenty of outdoor seating for balmy days) a mere five minutes’ stroll away. Grass pitches are spacious, on sloping land and have spectacular views over Somerset countryside to the sea. Basic facilities include a single portable toilet; there is no electricity, however, so remember the torches for late-night wanderings around the site. Barbecues are allowed by the pitches, and you can pick up bits and pieces from the local essentials shop (10 minutes’ walk). A more extensively stocked store and garage is five minutes’ drive away. The site is 10 minutes’ walk from Rowberrow Forest and 15 minutes’ drive from the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for hikes and cycle rides. You are welcome to bring your dogs to join in all the walkies fun, but please keep them under control when on site as there is livestock in adjacent fields.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Really nice chilled site with brilliant views of Weston super mare and Cardiff ove the chanel. Lovely people running the site and nice people staying here, 2 porta pottis and fresh drinking water. Brilliant views and it's basic and simple but just what you need to get away from most things. Was very peaceful and nice so I booked an extra night on a whim and so glad I did ❤️ Will definitely be staying again.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike it does what it says on the tin.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Toilets were clean and kept stocked with toilet roll.
View was amazing and so peaceful the whole trip.
There was so much space for pitches that when other people arrived we were barely disturbed by them the whole trip.
There's a pub about 1-2 minutes walk down the road with lovely food, perfect if you're too tired to go far or don't want to eat at your pitch.
No WiFi but that's expected.

Disliked: There was one tent on the opposite end of the field playing music really loudly at around 10pm which was annoying.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for a wonderful review, so pleased you had a nice stay. So sorry that another camper was playing music, we do stress that we are a quiet site and it is annoying when this happens. We always have our numbers displayed on the board and if ever there are any problems like this we are only too happy for you to ring us and we will sort it out. Hope this doesn’t put you off coming again.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Love this simple campsite, massive field , 2 portaloo’s , amazing views !! Lovely pub within a 3 minute walk .
I can’t believe other people moan that there isn’t any shower facilities when they state that it’s a back to basic campsite and before you click book it says in capital letters that there is no showers . It’s a great simple site that is less than £20 a night, brilliant !!!!

Disliked: Nothing , it’s how camp sites should be

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Back-to-basics farm site with a well kept camping field and nice views across the Bristol Channel. Plenty of space and very reasonable prices - we’ll be back.
Pub down the road does a lovely Sunday roast and nice beer too!

Disliked: Lack of shower block makes this a 1-2 night site for anyone without an onboard shower (like us).

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your kind review. As a small business we often weigh up providing better facilities for the site, but to do this we would have to put prices up, which we don’t want to do. It’s a balance, and the feedback is always useful to assess what we could improve.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Greay views, relaxed set up, no frills, lots of space, close to nice pub with real ale. Clean toilet (although ran out of loo roll so take some!). Beautiful woodland walks nearby.

Disliked: Despite making it clear on email and signage several people still let their dogs run loose. We took a nervous dog so had to watch for dogs or keep him shut in. It was a shame fires are not allowed and the reason we probably won't go back but if that's not an issue it's a great site.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, we appreciate it. I’m sorry you had problems with other dogs. We do make it clear that all dogs must be kept on leads but unfortunately some people seem to ignore it. We encourage people to ring either of the numbers on the board and we will immediately deal with any problems. Sorry this happened, we will keep a closer eye on it. Also, we do allow fires so we will make sure that is updated on PitchUp.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked: The view - amazing!
Quiet - we were the only people there
Short walk to a great pub.
Position - loads of wonderful scenery and good walks on the doorstep.
We like a minimalist site - only facilities are 2 portaloos, a tap and washing up sink. Suited us fine.

Disliked: The toilets might have been cleaner.

From the manager: Thank you for your kind review. The feedback is always useful to assess what we could improve, and we’re sorry to hear the toilets weren’t up to standard. This is something we will keep an eye on.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite (sloping, maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Natural field in rural location with good far reaching countryside views and beautiful sunsets. Choose your own location in the field. Located within a 2 minute walk of a nice country pub that serves good food (Swan Inn)
Ideally located close to M5 so we were able to stay one night to break up our journey up country.
Reasonably priced and quiet.

Disliked: Facilities are very basic ie portaloo and one outside sink. This was not a problem for us as we are self contained in a motorhome and this is also made clear in advert for the site ,but may be off putting to people who aren’t able to bring own facilities.

Local attractions

Spectacular landscapes are everywhere in this corner of Somerset, and you can admire the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (15 minutes’ drive) on foot or by bike. Try the Blackdown Hills AONB (50 minutes) for hikes to the Norman-era Castle Neroche and nearby Iron Age remains (55 minutes), or go hiking, climbing and caving in dramatic Cheddar Gorge (10 minutes) For more subterranean explorations, take the kids on tours of the caverns at Wookey Hole Caves (25 minutes); once back above ground, follow the animatronic dinosaur trail. Need to keep everyone busy? Get out on the dry ski slope at Mendip Activity Centre (five minutes), or join in bouts of archery and games of frisbee golf – if you fancy a round of the real thing, there’s an 18-hole course within 15 minutes’ drive. If the weather’s good, you might consider piling everyone in the car and heading to the popular beach at Weston-super-Mare (25 minutes) for a dip in the Bristol Channel, or Uphill Sands (half an hour) for kitesurfing and sand yachting. The family-friendly beach at Burnham-on-Sea (25 minutes) is the spot for building sandcastles and paddling in shallow waves.
