  • Off-grid glamping on a Somerset farm 10 minutes’ drive from Wells
  • Wookey Hole Caves 15 minutes’ drive; Glastonbury Abbey 20 minutes
  • Barbecue and pizza oven supplied; brewery and bistro on site
Luxury glamping in the Mendip Hills, anyone? Off-grid Maesbury Dens is based on a family farm 10 minutes’ drive from the ancient city of Wells in Somerset. Here the comfy accommodation is in spacious bell tents, each well-furnished with a ‘proper’ double bed and sofa bed (the latter handy for the kids, all bed linen provided), storage space, heating and a kitchen corner for the prep of easy camping meals. You’ll wake up to the twittering of the dawn chorus, look out over the lush hills as you get the coffee on and go to sleep on clear nights under a canopy of glittering stars. In between times, put your phone away and soak up the natural beauty around you from the outdoor seating. Barbecues are provided, so you can get busy cooking up an alfresco feast, or warm through pizzas in the oven built into your woodburing stove. Alternatively, make a beeline for the brewery or bistro on site, and swerve the cooking business altogether. Dogs are welcomed at Maesbury Dens, and you have a choice of country strolls in the fields surrounding the farm. The historic market town of Shepton Mallet is 10 minutes’ drive for stocking up on foodie supplies.

Local attractions

You’re certainly well-placed for discovering Somerset’s treasures. Wells (10 minutes’ drive) is home of a medieval cathedral bristling with stone gargoyles and carvings; adjacent is the impressive Bishop’s Place and manicured formal gardens, which you can explore on guided tours. Glastonbury Abbey (20 minutes) is another storied relic well-worth exploring; while in the vicinity you can also climb up Glastonbury Tor (25 minutes) for spectacular views across Somerset. There are more stunning vistas from the top of Cheddar Gorge (20 minutes), a walking, biking and climbing hub that can keep all the family busy. While you’re there, explore the stalactite-filled caves buried into the Mendip Hills – they were once used to store and ripen Cheddar cheeses. Kids with you? Wookey Hole Caves (15 minutes) is a one-stop entertainment hub with more subterranean limestone caverns to tour; there’s also a 4D cinema (remember that for any rainy days), a dinosaur trail, adventure golf course and mirror maze – in short, plenty to do on a family day out.
