  • Peaceful and scenic Somerset farm site with Blackdown Hills views
  • Beach, Exeter and Exmoor within 45 minutes' drive; Taunton 15 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with an off-lead exercise area
Restful breaks in rural Somerset and views of the Blackdown Hills… Sounds rather pleasant, doesn't it? That magic mix of peace and quiet and far-reaching country views is exactly what's on offer at Buckland Farm Camping, a spacious site near the small village of West Buckland. Buckland Farm Camping is surrounded by pretty trees, hedges and a little stream – a landscape that lends itself to relaxed walks and cycle rides (many of which are directly accessible from the farm). The facilities here are also geared towards outdoor living, with highlights including a picnic area, a playground and an off-lead dog park where four-legged friends can run free (please keep dogs on leads in all other parts of the campsite). And handily, for those rainy days, a covered communal area is available, with seating, books, local guides and games, along with picnic tables outside for when it brightens up. Other additions like a small shower block, composting toilets, taps for drinking water and a washing-up station will all doubtless come in handy. There's also a solar-powered freezer (for ice blocks) and charging points. Off site, a number of excellent country pubs can be reached within a 10-minute drive; Taunton town centre is 15 minutes away.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Beautiful quiet campsite at the foot of the Blackdown Hills on a working farm with wonderful views. Large pitches cut in amongst the meadow grasses, composting loos, showers and solar powered shed for USB charging. All very low impact and green. They also had two pitches that were fully enclosed with wire fencing, which were occupied by dog owners and their vans, such a great idea.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Location is nice and not far from places to visit. Pitch was a good size. Can hear M5 traffic but that’s to be expected when camping not far from main roads etc. Toilets okay and nice fenced iff areas for dogs.

Disliked: Not really a dislike, more in a way that improvements could be made to make this site really good. Wash up sinks and showers needs to have clear instructions on Turning on/off the water supply to avoid wasting water and making the boiler go into fault and no longer produce hot water, also a separate water supply to the showers so you don’t turn the water off if someone is showering. Number the pitches so people can book specific areas. Bell tent in the middle is in the best spot of the campsite, wish it was our pitch lol.

Local attractions

The Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty starts just over the road from the farm and is full of places to explore, whether you feel like doing that on foot, by bike or on horseback. Nearby starting points for adventures include the Wellington Monument (10 minutes' drive), the tallest three-sided obelisk in the world, or nature reserves like Quants Wood (five minutes). Exploring the surrounding county of Somerset is also a breeze, whether you're heading to the county town of Taunton (15 minutes) to see the castle, museum and shops or fancy jaunts to the nearby Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes). Day trips to the coast and the stunning Exmoor National Park can also both be sorted in 40 minutes by road or less. It's unlikely you'll spend your whole time in Somerset, though, as Devon's also on your doorstep. Exeter city centre is half an hour away, while beach time and fossil hunting in Lyme Regis (40 minutes) or trips on Seaton Tramway (40 minutes) are also equally accessible.
