Stunning sunset view enjoyed by a camper during june.

  • Peaceful site in Exmoor’s Porlock Vale, for guests aged 16 and over
  • Around three miles from Minehead or the village of Porlock
  • In a farmed meadow on the National Trust's Holnicote Estate
Due for some relaxation? Take yourself away to this peaceful spot in a gorgeous, spacious nine-acre farmland meadow at Porlock Vale Campsite on Holt Ball Farm, which is on the National Trust’s Holnicote Estate in Exmoor National Park. There are spectacular views towards North Hill, Selworthy Forest, Hurlstone Point and Grabbist. Behind the field rises the splendid Dunkery Commons moorland, which is easily accessible via the bridleway just through the farm driveway, which leads up to Robin Howe, Webber’s Post and Dunkery Beacon. A green and sustainable site, Porlock Vale Campsite is conveniently positioned for exploring the surrounding Exmoor countryside, moorlands, woodlands and coast too. This includes Bossington Beach (10 minutes’ drive) and Porlock Weir (15 minutes). Impressive oak trees add to the pretty landscape and peace and quiet. A myriad of wildlife can be spotted, including buzzards, foxes, hares, rabbits, beavers and water voles - and if you’re lucky enough, you may see wild red deer passing through. The National Trust is progressing rewilding and land recovery projects in the area, making it a particularly interesting spot for folks who are interested in the environment, biodiversity, climate change and how farming is being adapted to benefit nature. The site’s theme of peace and tranquillity respects the abundance of wildlife and farm animals living here, which is why there is no amplified music or loud noise and quiet hours after 10pm. Recycling and rubbish bins are provided so that guests can leave no trace, as the field reverts back to its gorgeous natural state at the end of the season.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Love this site so so much I keep coming back, the facilities are just what you need, clean and well maintained, loads of space even when fully booked, this place is very healing for the soul. As a solo female camper I feel totally safe. Dawn, the host, comes by to check on everyone a couple of times a day and is always at the end of a message if anything needs addressing. I cannot fault a single thing. The most beautiful setting, nothing but wildlife, stunning views and calm. I could spend every camping trip here. Dawn has got things spot on and I'm so grateful to have found this spot in paradise. Can't wait to return.

Disliked Absolutely NOTHING

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely location, and very quiet site.

Disliked No Wi-Fi, just 4G and 5G.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi David, thanks for your review. A couple of things. This is an off grid campsite, so no Wi-Fi. However, PitchUp only offer campsite owners a tick box for Wi-Fi and no option to indicate if campers can access the internet through 4G or 5G. Most of our campers are delighted to be able to get online from the field - and reception depends on the network they are on.
This is promoted as a peaceful campsite to come and chill, relax and enjoy nature, wildlife and endless walking and cycling in our spectacularly beautiful area of Exmoor. It's not advertised as having an activities programme on site. The off-grid facilities are comfortable (warm showers and washing up, flushing loos with cloakroom areas, etc) and are specifically designed to have low environmental impact, in line with our Greener Camping ethos and certification, and the land regeneration scheme here on the farm.

If you like peaceful, slightly slopey beauty, do it.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Amazing, beautiful, peaceful setting with space and stunning views. Friendly dogs, and owner!

Disliked Details, but solar lights in facilities were unreliable and no windows so weeing/showering in gloom happened.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Sam, thank you so much for the lovely review. As you know, I always send a welcome text so you have my contact details and you also see me on site. So, if you're having any issues, like you mention the solar light - just tell me so we can fix it. This is the first I've heard of it and they're checked every day - so I'd much prefer a text or mention, than read it on here, if possible. Thank you anyway and so glad you enjoyed your stay.

Great, quiet campsite.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Absolutely loved this little gem. Amazing view, beautiful walks. Dawn was so welcoming. Basic facilities but perfectly adequate. Might get a bit busy if all 15 pitches were needing them. There are two loos, one women's, one men's and an extra compost loo and two showers. Such a peaceful spot. We'll be back.

Disliked Nothing.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for a great review, Emma. Our quest is to provide a beautiful campsite, where campers can enjoy peaceful, spacious pitches with stunning scenery all around - and have minimal environmental impact. The comfortable and well-tended off-grid facilities are designed with this in mind - and provide a warm water washing up area, two warm showers, two flushing loos and a compost loo. The small number of pitches (just 15 in a 9 acre field) ensure that everyone can enjoy space, quiet and comfort, while we continue to evolve species rich grassland and respect nature. Looking forward to welcoming you back.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Stunning views, easy to find a pitch, quiet and beautiful. Just a lovely spot. Clean toilets and kitchen block. The part of the field with the best views was sloped but it was pretty much fine!

Disliked The fire pit situation, sadly. We found the wood and slab for the fire pit but couldn’t find the actual pit. Tried to message Dawn but had no signal for a mile or so around the site (only got signal back when on the a39).

A fellow camper kindly messaged Dawn for us but I think it was too late in the evening (maybe after 20:30) so no luck. Watched with envy as other campers sat round their fires cooking and enjoying the stars

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your great review. I think I spoke to you about fires earlier in the evening, when it was windy and explained that the ground is like a tinderbox and we're not encouraging firepits at the moment. Thank you so much for not lighting a fire. We ask campers to buy logs on site and if other campers were burning their own logs last night - hmm, tut, tut! Thank you for letting me know about that too. We appreciate you being responsible when there is such a fire risk.

Local attractions

The campsite shares the farm with the Exmoor Pony Project, a locally run initiative to breed, care for and encourage better understanding of Exmoor's rare native ponies. All the animals are housed in excellent conditions, and you can come and admire them looking their best as they trot between their barns, corrals and paddocks. Five minutes' drive away from site, the picture-postcard village of Selworthy has spectacular views over the local countryside, plus a tea room where you can fill up on freshly baked cake. For access to the sea, there's Bossington beach (10 minutes' drive), a pebble-based spot owned by the National Trust with pretty views over the Exmoor Hills, or you could take the scenic drive through forests and moors to Lynton and Lynmouth (30 minutes) for fish and chips on the quay and surfing in the spray. Exmoor is one of those fabulous places that has both countryside and coast to explore, so walkers and cyclists have a plethora of scenery to enjoy on their jaunts here. The South West Coast Path is one of the main draws, of course – you could fill many a day covering several different sections – while inland highlights include Dunkery Beacon (three miles away) and Tarr Steps (half an hour’s drive).
