Far-reaching views from the camping meadow

  • Wild pop-up site with stunning views on a Somerset rewilding farm
  • Stourhead 15 minutes’ drive and Longleat 20 minutes
  • Basic off-grid pitches surrounded by wildlife; shops 15 minutes’ drive
If you’d like to give back to the land on your West Country camping holiday, then Heal Somerset is the place for you. At 15 minutes’ drive from Bruton, this is a pop-up site on a rewilding farm, with a wild vibe and spectacular views over Somerset valleys. The peaceful camping field is neatly mown and there are no numbered pitches, so you can choose where to pitch your tent. It’s a pretty basic setup with a mains water tap and compost loo. There is a shower at the farmhouse nearby, accessible via a lockbox (code provided before arrival), but there is no warden around on site so this really is a full-on wild camping experience. Once you’re settled in, you can follow mown paths to the rewilding area and see how the land is responding; hopefully you’ll also spot some of the abundant wildlife that now calls it home. For the benefit of that wildlife, dogs are not allowed on site (unless they are assistance dogs). To preserve the feeling of a retreat in untamed nature, vehicles aren’t allowed on the camping field; it’s a 500-metre walk up a track from the parking area. However, any heavy gear can be dropped off before you park. There is a railway line in the valley, with occasional trains passing through. The sound is brief and train lines make great wildlife corridors, so hopefully it won’t disturb you at all.

Local attractions

There’s a station in Bruton (15 minutes’ drive) if you’re travelling by public transport. The village is home to restaurants and shops as well as Hauser & Wirth Somerset (10 minutes’ walk from the centre). The latter is well-worth a visit for its contemporary art displays; you can tour art installations in the gardens for free. Frome (20 minutes’ drive) has shops and supermarkets as well as concerts and market stalls in the Cheese and Grain events venue. There’s a lot of history in this corner of Somerset too; you can nose around the handsome Palladian mansion at National Trust-owned Stourhead (15 minutes), and then explore the extensive gardens filled with follies and water features. Perhaps you’d also like to walk up to Alfred’s Tower for stunning views over Somerset and Wiltshire? Moated Nunney Castle (also 15 minutes) is a romantic medieval ruin that is free to wander. If you have kids with you, combine culture with a family day out at Longleat (20 minutes); take a self-guided look at Longleat House and then move on to spotting lions, giraffes and elephants in the safari park.
