  • Eco-conscious site in a Somerset valley near National Cycle Route 3
  • Crewkerne village 10 minutes’ drive; Jurassic Coast 40 minutes
  • Street food pop-ups on site, plus woodland activities
In a secluded valley a 10-minute drive from the South Somerset village of Crewkerne, Wytch Wood Camping is an eco-conscious retreat surrounded by wildflowers and ancient woodland. Adjacent to National Cycle Route 3, it's part of a farm that has been home to the Newman family since 1963. Several footpaths cross the farm, and a brisk walk to the top of the hills rewards you with far-reaching views over Somerset and Dorset. Local company RKS Unity arranges woodland activities for adults and families, including soft archery, axe throwing and bushcraft skills like lighting fires without matches. And when you get thirsty, you’ll be drinking cool spring water (safely filtered, of course) from one of the sources of the River Axe. There are barista-made coffee and organic teas in the mornings and traditional cream teas in the afternoon. In addition, a licensed bar sells local ciders and beer on weekends. The owners have teamed up with a number of local suppliers to provide hot food to the site, and options include home-cooked curries on Friday nights and street food pop-ups making meals to order on Saturday nights. Crewkerne has a couple of supermarkets, plus independent butchers, bakeries and a fruit and veg shop. Compost loos are positioned discreetly around the site, and there are three hot showers stocked up with eco-friendly shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Washing-up stations are supplied with biodegradable washing-up liquid and soaps, and there are comprehensive recycling facilities on site.

Local attractions

If you visit Forde Abbey House and Gardens (20 minutes’ drive), be sure to file past the priceless 16th-century Mortlake Tapestries, based on sketches by Raphael and woven in Brussels, before heading outside. The award-winning gardens are dotted with colourful camellia bushes and benches from which to take in the seasonal highlights. Fancy a day at the seaside? The Jurassic Coast (40 minutes) beckons – not only with swimming beaches, watersports and the South West Coast Path, but also with imposing rock formations like Durdle Door, a natural arch jutting out into the sea. And, of course, there is the area’s archaeological heritage: the beaches between Lyme Regis and Charmouth are particularly popular with fossil hunters. From Aston Martins to Williams Formula One cars, there’s plenty to see at Haynes Motor Museum (50 minutes), where displays explore different eras and themes. Are you into brightly coloured vehicles? Head to the Red Room first (though there’s plenty of red in the Ferrari exhibition, too). There’s also a collection of speedway motorcycles.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Absolutely FANTASTIC site and lovely hospitality. Tucked away in beautiful countryside, remote enough to feel in the middle of nowhere but close enough to the nearest town to feel connected enough for supplies and transport. Composting toilets, tree planting, and fabulous land management with the minimum of encroachment on the land. Great Green credentials! We only managed a night but next time it will be for as long as we are allowed!

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: An incredibly beautiful campsite and overall very peaceful setting. Elise, the host was very helpful. The logs provided are excellent quality and the site is very child friendly.

Disliked: The dark composting toilets. Some pitches benefitted from a clear plastic roof, ours was effectively a shed with a solid roof so using the toilet was not a nice experience as it was pitch black in there (the light didn't work at night or in the day). Giving all the toilets light via a plastic roof would help immensely.

From the manager: Sorry you felt that way Laura - I'd have put you in a different pitch on your second visit if I'd realised there was an issue. There is a second light in that loo which I think you may not have found - a lightbulb shaped one with a button on the back to operate. I do aprpeciate those ones are dark, but the roof is integral to the structure so not a simple fix to replace with a clear one. Please if you have any issues another time, just let me know so that I can do something about it at the time. I'm glad you enjoyed the rest of the site.

Skyview bell tent

Liked: We stayed in the Skyview Glamping Pitch. And it blew past any expectations we had. We had our own secluded pitch, with an outside kitchen area, fire pit, outside seating and two hammocks. Alongside the very well furnished glamping bell tent, with a massive double bed and two singles.
The site is very quiet with limited pitches very well spread out so that no one is interrupting any one else.
Enjoyed the Axe Throwing and Archery that was on the Wednesday night we were there, great fun to have a go at these activities in a safe environment.
The only downside was that the trip wasn’t long enough!
Would definitely come back again

From the manager: Thanks so much for coming to stay and wonderful to hear you enjoyed Skyview so much! Hope to welcome you back for longer next time :-)
