  • Family-friendly campsite adjoining a Winfrith Newburgh pub in Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive to the Jurassic Coast, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door
  • Showers and loos on site; delicious food and drink in The Red Lion pub
Set in the middle of lovely Dorset countryside and on the outskirts of the peaceful village of Winfrith Newburgh, The Red Lion is a family-run pub with a namesake campsite on the extensive field to its rear. There’s easy access by car to dump your gear at the spacious pitches – most are sheltered by mature trees – and modern facilities on-site include showers, mains water, toilets and a washing-up area. The adjoining pub is open throughout the year: winter brings warming log fires while summer invites alfresco dining in the beer garden – and whenever you visit, you’re assured of a constant supply of delicious food as well as award-winning West Country ales and ciders. Luckily the site is dog-friendly as it’s a great base for soaking up Dorset’s rural vibe on quiet walks across the downs. If you’d like to spark up your barbecue while you’re there, there’s a small store in the village; otherwise, do a bigger stock up in Dorchester (15 minutes).

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked We had a great stay at the campsite, we were in a tent in quite cold weather but there was a nice shower and toilet block off the main pub building so we were able to warm up, plus good food and really friendly staff in the pub - would definitely recommend.

Powered gravel and sand travel trailer campsite

Liked Pitch was a large gravelled area, electric supply on pitch.
It’s in the grounds of a pub, so it was a short walk for a drink or food, staff in the pub were very friendly as was the site reception.

Disliked Close to Road so quite noisy, toilet block had one toilet and one shower out of order, note this half of this unit. They were very clean throughout our stay, but required maintenance, locks difficult to open, door difficult to close, just required some TLC.
One pitch was unusable due to flooding. We did have rather heavy rain at the start of our stay.
The chemical waste needed a hose for wash out purposes.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We’re glad you enjoyed the pitch and the friendliness of our staff. We appreciate your constructive feedback.

Powered gravel and sand travel trailer campsite

Liked Convenient location to explore the area

Disliked Shower facilities were limited as there was an issue in 1 cabin plus the cabin and toilet were cold and not user friendly in the winter weather. Large flooded area meant getting wet legs even with boots on

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed our convenient location.

We’re sorry to hear that the facilities weren't as you expected. It sounds like you may not have been aware of our second shower block, which is much more user-friendly during the autumn season, and that the pub toilets are also available to campers. We apologise that this wasn’t made clearer during your stay. We appreciate your comments and will use them to improve the guest experience.

Primitive cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Great location with easy access. Spacious level gravel pitch. The people in the pub were very friendly and there was great food and drink, with a 10% discount. The toilets and showers were ok, although would have preferred not to have to enter a code to get in.

Disliked Small changing space in the shower. Gate hard to open.

From the manager: Thank you for your review! We're glad you enjoyed the location and spacious pitch. We appreciate your feedback on the showers and gate as well. Hope to welcome you back again soon!

Local attractions

You won’t have to wander very far afield to sample the best of Dorset attractions; The Red Lion is only 10 minutes’ drive from Man O’War Beach on the Jurassic Coast, the spectacular Durdle Door sea arch and romantic, almost circular Lulworth Cove. The kids will relish the chance to encounter the primates at Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre (yes, also 10 minutes away), or see the nesting mute swans at Abbotsbury Swannery (40 minutes). Weymouth (25 minutes), its sandy beaches and Sea Life Adventure Park is also a good bet for keeping youngsters happy. Plus, the ever-popular Tank Museum in Bovington (10 minutes) is within striking distance. Take the Dorset air as you scramble up to Osmington White Horse (15 minutes), cut into the limestone landscape in 1808, for views over the downs to the English Channel. There are more wonderful vistas to be had from hilltop Corfe Castle (also 15 minutes), and if any cobwebs still need blowing away, head to Chesil Beach (half an hour) for a blustery walk along the shingle.
