  • Simple site by a lake and river on a working Dorset farm
  • A quarter of an hour's drive from Lulworth Cove and Dorchester
  • Firepits and barbecues welcome; logs and essentials sold on site
An apt name is Misty Meadows – this small pop-up site on a busy working dairy farm just outside the peaceful Dorset village of Owermoigne is regularly graced by atmospheric misty dawns and dusks. The meadows themselves are set in a very sheltered location, with a meandering river on the one side and a small lake on the other. This spot is an excellent place for family time without any electricity or wifi to distract you, but don't worry – entertainment is provided by the ducks, swans, geese, frogs, deer, dragonflies and other creatures you'll be sharing the site with. Children can paddle in the river here on hot days (under adult supervision, of course), while elsewhere there are footpaths that start right on the edge of the farm that can take you deep into the local countryside. Barbecues are allowed, so make sure you bring your marshmallows and a comfy chair for stargazing. Some firepits are available to hire if you haven’t got your own, and logs and other essentials are usually sold on site. Misty Meadows is just under a mile and a half from a well-stocked farm shop in the centre of Owermoigne. Crossways, a slightly larger village with more amenities, is a mile and a half in the other direction.

Local attractions

This is cider country, so a visit to the Mill House Cider Museum (five minutes' walk) is in order – and, given how much apple-fermenting expertise there is around the place, it'd be almost rude not to pick up a few local ciders at the gift shop while you're at it. Also within walking distance is the Dorset Collection of Clocks (five minutes' walk), a top collection of timepieces housed in the same building. Lots of top Dorset beaches and seaside spots like Lulworth Cove (15 minutes' drive) and Weymouth (20 minutes) are within easy reach by road, so there are plenty of opportunities for getting out to see the Jurassic Coast along the South West Coast Path at Misty Meadows. Inland, other top picks include the Tank Museum (15 minutes) with its rip-roaring military displays and Monkey World (15 minutes), one of the largest ape rescue centres in Europe. You might also like to pay a visit to historic Dorchester (15 minutes), Dorset's county town in the middle of Hardy Country, or to see the village of Corfe Castle (25 minutes), home to an impressive Norman fortress, a steam railway and some of the best tea rooms in the area.

Liked: Lovely location, rivers, wildlife, and lives up to the misty meadow name. We went to say hello to the cows, visit the cider museum for cider and ice cream, and enjoyed some lovely walks.
