  • Secluded family-friendly site on the Dorset coast
  • A 20-minute drive to Studland's beaches, watersports and horsetrekking
  • Tuck shop, meals served twice daily, pizza delivery and lawn games
There’s a touch of those much-loved kids’ adventure tales to this spot on the Dorset coast: Swallows and Amazons meet the Famous Five at Camp Cleavel, a secluded setup looking across the bay to Poole about 45 minutes away by car. It’s all about maximum outdoor antics here, big open spaces to run about in, maybe playing with some of the giant lawn games, splashing in the sea or just making up your own entertainment… remember that? You can get cracking on that right away as everything will be ready for you when you arrive; everyone has outdoor seating, solar lighting and a bit of festive bunting too. You’re out in the wilds, but not too wild: staff a on hand at all times (they’ll even charge your phones for you) and twice a day for breakfast and dinner there’s a big cook-up in the gazebo. (If you prefer doing things your own way you can store food in the fridge, and barbecue your bangers by the bay.) The tuck shop sells sweets, ice cream and drinks throughout the day; stonebaked pizzas can be delivered to your door and every evening the massive main campfire is fired up. What larks! On the practical side, the portable toilets and disabled toilet are cleaned throughout the day and hot showers can be found a 15-minute drive away at the Burnbake Forest campsite.

Local attractions

Burnbake’s a handy spot to get high among the trees on the ropes and zipwires. Down on the ground, try trekking the heathlands on horseback from the Studland Trekking Centre, 20 minutes away, or set course for Brenscome Outdoor Centre in Wareham for all manner of high energy stuff from powerboating to raft-building, paddleboarding and archery (20 minutes). For good times by the briny, it’s a 20-minute drive to Studland’s beaches, which are wide and sandy surrounded by nature-filled dunes and heaths. For wilder stretches and rockpooling, try Kimmeridge, half an hour away or go wilder still at Winspit beach, so cut off you can only reach it on foot from Worth Matravers (also half an hour away). You can walk for miles along the South West Coast Path and join it 20 minutes away on Studland beach; if you’re not up for all 630 miles then a stroll up to Shell Bay and a ferry-ride across to Sandbanks makes a gentle half-day diversion. Three-quarters of an hour away, Poole's your place for slides, chutes and screeches at the Splashdown waterpark as well as harbour cruises, dolphin-spotting and sea-fishing trips while inland, the residents of Monkey World and the hardware in the Tank Museum, both half an hour away, should keep most monkeys out of mischief.
