Woodland cosy cabin
Firepit set-up

  • Dog-friendly six-acre site in an ancient Dorset woodland
  • A 15-minute drive to Dorchester and Sherborne; 40 minutes to Weymouth
  • Firepits allowed; woodland tracks; local pub 15 minutes’ walk away
Searching for a remote-feeling site with a woodland and bushcraft opportunities around? You won’t be barking up the wrong tree at Bridgewood, a site in a six-acre corner of the 70-acre Bridge Wood in Dorset, an ancient area of woodland. Here, you’ll have your pick of the woodland trails around and lots of spots on site to get stuck into den-making or bushcraft. Dogs are also welcome for an additional fee. Things both look and feel majestic here, what with the tall trees overhead. As for facilities on the site, these include a composting toilet and solar shower – comfortable, convenient and eco-friendly. Firepits are a way to wind down in the evening here, as long as they’re well-contained (it is a woodland, after all); there's no electricity, as this is a back to basics site. Another option is to head to the local pub, which is either two minutes’ drive away or a leisurely 15-minutes’ country walk. There’s additional car parking in the site’s adjacent field to keep vehicles away from the woods, so it’s also easy to get out and pick up a few bits and pieces from the nearest food shop, 15 minutes’ drive away.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked We received a friendly welcome from the owner who showed us options of different pitches and also gave us information about the site and area.

The site itself is incredibly peaceful and lovely to explore.

Numerous walking routes are nearby - including to a warm and welcoming nearby pub.

There were many helpful facilities including trolleys to take your gear from the car park to your pitch, which vary in distance up to a few minutes walk.

We went during a stormy period but we felt cosy and sheltered from the wind on our pitched called “Elder”.

It’s great to come away from a break feeling we have left minimal trace with composting toilets and solar shower bags.

The site seems well looked after, we would certainly come again.

1 bedroom cabin

Liked We enjoyed every second of our stay in the cabin. The cabin have everything you possibly need. There is fire pit outside with table and bench. The toilet and shower for your personal use. The cabin is beautifully decorated and the owners added small bits to make even more beautiful. We will definitely go back again. There are camping carts you can use to carry your staff from car to the cabin. There was nothing I could say was wrong about the place. Absolutely 💯 fantastic stay away from the rat race.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked Really freubdly hosts who gave us a friendly introduction to the site.
The site itself was beautiful: you had enough privacy to think you were off the grid, but our friends stayed in a plot near us which was nice. There is a pub located about a 5 minute walk away which is ideal.

The facilities were good and easy to access.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked An oasis of calm, waking up among the trees to the sound of the birds really was a lovely way to spend a night. Individual pitches very well spread out so good privacy for all. Do remember to take a good torch because this is REAL camping in the woods and gets super dark which is perfect for a good nights sleep. Very quiet location, pub in walking distance and the owners at Bridgewood Camping are perfect hosts and very welcoming.

Disliked There is nothing not to like.

Liked Stayed for 2 nights in the cabin and it was lovely, it was perfect for a relaxing weekend away with our 7 year old son who also had a fantastic time.

Was showed around when we first arrived which was brilliant.

Everything was thought of and the cabin had everything you needed.

Firewood and water top ups were easy to access.

Will 100% come back again.

From the manager: It was really lovely to meet with you and for taking the time to give us such a nice review.
We must thank you for the fantastic photos, really enjoyed the one with your son by the firepit toasting some marshmallows - proper camping experience! You'd be more than welcome to return, especially as you left the Cabin so clean and tidy after your stay - thanks again. Hope you have a great rest of the summer.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked We loved how peaceful and quiet the campsite was. It felt really private—we couldn’t see any of our neighbours, which made it feel like we had the place to ourselves. It was the perfect spot to relax and unwind, and we had a really lovely time.

Disliked If we had to mention one thing, the shower and toilet facilities were definitely on the more rustic side—which added to the wild, back-to-nature experience! While they may not be for everyone, they were part of the charm of staying somewhere so remote and peaceful.

Local attractions

You’ll have had a good taste of woodland life on site, so it might suit you to mix things up with a little salt, sea and sand. One of the closest coastal patches is Weymouth beach (40 minutes’ drive) and there’s a good sandy stretch here, plus paddleboards and kayaks for hire to get out on the water. A little further away, the Jurassic coast is truly your oyster, as the rocky coves of the Isle of Portland (50 minutes) and fossil-hunting down Lyme Regis (an hour) are a day trip away. What of some historic sites along the way? Well, the National Trust’s Cerne Giant (10 minutes) is an interesting one, as the chalk hillside gives way to an ancient club-wielding sculpture of a man. There are two castles in the market town of Sherborne (15 minutes) and elsewhere, Forde Abbey House and Gardens (45 minutes) has a house with tapestries and a plant nursery of old. To end, perhaps you’ll want to mix and match the town with a more remote wildlife haven? The high street, cinemas and eateries in Dorchester (15 minutes) are certainly a nice buzz after the peaceful nature reserve in Alners Gorse Butterfly Reserve (15 minutes).
