  • Peaceful site on a family-run farm 10 minutes' drive from Lyme Regis
  • A 10-minute drive from Charmouth beach; 15 mins from West Bay
  • Gorgeous views over west Dorset countryside
Some folk seek out stacks of swish facilities for their hols; others would gladly trade all those pools, clubhouses and swish bathrooms for serene space and stunning scenery. Those that fall into the latter group should certainly take a look at Penn Farm Campsite, a peaceful and pretty site on a family-run farm within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 10 minutes’ drive from Lyme Regis. Wisely, the owners here realised that nothing they could possibly install would top the gorgeous views over the west Dorset countryside, so they’ve embraced the natural setting and kept the facilities low key. The setup here stretches to a couple of toilets, a shower, a washing-up area and facilities to deal with rubbish and chemical disposal; anything else you require to keep you happy you’ll need to bring along with you. Among the bits you might like to consider packing are barbecues for evenings spent out in the open in the company of a few beers and bangers as the sun sets. And if you’ve got a dog that you feel might appreciate the scenery too, feel free to bring them along to get out on country and coastal walks. Speaking of the coast – that’s the Jurassic Coast, a fine stretch 10 minutes’ drive away for beaches, boat trips, fishing and fossil hunting. For other days out, Exeter, Yeovil, Taunton and Dorchester are all within a 45-minute drive.

Liked Great location—tucked away in nature yet close enough to reach easily. The owners are incredibly friendly and make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. All the facilities you could need are right on site—clean showers, well-kept toilets, and tidy pitches. Perfect for a relaxing getaway without sacrificing comfort.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Lovely well maintained site with extra spacious pitches and fantastic views. The site intentionally keeps lots of space available so you can stretch out.

There's picnic benches by most pitches which is a nice touch. Makes things much easier when camping.

Really close to the Jurassic coast for some fossil hunting or beach time.

Disliked The toilet blocks is quite far away up a steep hill from the main field if you're at the bottom end.

If you've got a low car the driveway might be a bit of an ordeal. We struggled a bit but not a big deal.

On our second night 3 very noises families arrived all traveling together, letting their kids run riot completely ignoring the "quiet site" rules. Warden apologised, but I'd rather he just asked them to be quiet. Ruined our second evening, which is a shame as the stay was otherwise fantastic.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Loved the simplicity of this site. Yes it’s basic but that’s all know before arrival. The field is kept in good condition and the facilities were kept clean. The view was great with really large spaces , added bonus was the picnic benches. It was so quiet and so much space for the kids to play ball games. It’s walking distance to Lyme but does take an hour. The best bit for us was that there was no light pollution so star gazing at night was really spectacular.

Disliked A very simple thing that would make things so much easier when using the facilities, please add some shelves and some hooks so there is somewhere to put your bags and wash items other than the floor. Other than that I can’t think of anything we will definitely be back.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Great location near lots of nice places and beaches. Camp site was great. Really big spacious pitches. People were not crammed in. Views were fantastic. Very quiet, which is what we like. Clean shower and toilets. Never had to que for shower. Has a freezer and charging facilities. Owner was also very nice and made you feel at peace and was happy to help if you needed. My phone also had a decent signal. I booked the week before I went, I felt lucky to have got a spot here. I would definitely go back again. Highly recommend.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Always excellent here. The pitches are well kept and easy to get tent pegs into. Clean site, well-maintained facilities and a great location.

Disliked The pitches are on the side of a hill, so you need to be a bit careful about how you put your tent up! There are plenty of fairly flat areas, but nothing is dead flat.

Local attractions

It’s a very fine part of the world, the Jurassic Coast – and guests at Penn Farm will be close to one of its huge draws, the fossil hunting mecca of Charmouth, just under 10 minutes’ drive from the site. Chesil beach (half an hour) and Durdle Door (an hour) are both worth exploring too, and of course there are some stunning walks to be had along the coast path pretty much wherever you choose. Telly fans might already recognise the backdrop of West Bay (15 minutes) if they’ve ever watched ITV's Broadchurch; also familiar to foodies will be the backdrop of chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s pad River Cottage, around 20 minutes’ drive away. If you fancy having a go at your own bit of outdoor cheffing, perhaps you’d also like to have a whirl at catching your own supper on a fishing trip from Lyme Regis (10 minutes). If you’ve brought the kids along, it’s a good idea to plan days out in Dorchester (35 minutes), where there’s a dinosaur museum and teddy bear museum, at the farm park at Kingston Maurward (40 minutes) or at Weymouth’s Sea Life Centre (45 minutes).
