  • Small, off-grid and low-impact site with views of Dorset countryside
  • Surrounded by hills and woods; under an hour’s walk to Charmouth beach
  • Communal kitchen facilities; campfire bundles and farm food for sale
Pining for a peaceful retreat with eco credentials and a break packed with things like walks to the beach, stargazing and relaxing around a firepit? Under an hour’s walk from Charmouth beach on the Jurassic coast, Linden Lea Camping is a small site with a big view. This is an enviable location indeed, surrounded by west Dorset hills and woods. It’s also family- and dog-friendly (just read the dog policy first, please). Being eco-friendly is of the utmost importance to Linden Lea Camping. The place is off-grid and low-impact, with the goal of treading gently on the earth, leaving as little trace as possible and respecting the rights of the people and the creatures that live locally. The team here encourage guests to bring eco toiletries for the showers, as they work best with the soak-aways, and they provide eco washing-up liquid, hand soap and sanitiser. There’s no need for excess plastic water bottles either, as the site provides drinking water. There’s a bunch of excellent shared facilities on site, including a small covered outdoor kitchen with a small gas cooker with two rings, a grill and oven. There’s a kettle, spare cutlery and plates, washing-up facilities like sponges and scourers and other cooking basics like a tin opener, cheese grater, colander, bottle opener and saucepans. If you’d rather cook the old-school way, the site sells a bundle of firewood, kindling and firelighters to help you use the firebowls provided, plus charcoal for your barbecue (although note that disposable barbecues aren’t permitted). There’s a shared fridge and freezer and a charging point in the shop, which sells produce from the farm. Expect elderflower champagne, apple juice, sheep skins, elderflower cordial, herbal skin healing salves, lip balms and some fresh veg and eggs. Other facilities on site include two composting toilets with hand-washing facilities and one hot shower and wet room. There are steps to the toilets and shower.

Bell tent (four person)

Liked: Lovely site, quiet, with well spaced pitches. Everything was easily available, both on site and nearby in Charmouth. Including the beach!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Friendly people who popped by twice a day not to intrude but to check how things were going or if anything was needed. Quiet site on our stay with plenty of room. Not too difficult to find. Compostable toilets were not to the boys tastes but actually I found them so much better than the chemical over used site loos of others. Good place to venture from and surprising how many road routes and signposts lead back to Wooten Fitzpaign so once you sourced a couple of village landmarks it was easy to get back to site. Shower was great, Shepard type but with plenty of room if you have a family member you need to sort out. A freezer in the shop with local products for the wood burners A little over priced but you are paying for their electric and the convenience of being on site and some good looking local products tbf. All in all a happy little place for the price and and advertised.

Disliked: Probably would put a more visual sign up on the road/entrance: not such bad feedback considering I’m a fussy Sod 😂

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: What a lovely little campsite! Such attention to detail with the flowers everywhere, herbs near the garden and beautiful smelling handwash. Mary and Sarah were great hosts, very friendly and on the end of the phone if needed. The shower was hot and spacious, and all the facilities were very clean. The kitchen was great and had a few utensils/pans etc to borrow, which was perfect if like us you forget your chopping board! A fridge/freezer and charging point was very handy, and we bought some excellent handmade skin healing balm from the campsite too. We can’t fault it, we’ll definitely be back next year!!

Local attractions

First, fossil hunting on the Jurassic coast? A lazy day on the beach? Eating well at the local cafés and restaurants? Charmouth (five minutes’ drive) and Lyme Regis (15 minutes) are top spots for all three activities. Lyme Regis is especially lively during the Regatta and Carnival week. Of course, footpaths and cycling trails are in no short supply around here. The National Cycle Route 2 runs along the lane at the bottom of the field. For longer wanders, long-distance trails within walking distance include The Liberty Trail, The Monarch’s Way and the Wessex Ridgeway. Perhaps you fancy browsing the vintage markets at Bridport (20 minutes) and West Bay (20 minutes) too. If you’re wondering about public transport, public buses run through Charmouth, and Axminster (15 minutes) is the nearest mainline railway station (on the Waterloo to Exeter line).
