Higher Lewell Farmhouse: The 7 bell tents, you may park next to your tent

General

  • Peaceful paddock surrounded by fields on the edge of a quiet village
  • Central to the Jurassic Coast and 15 minutes' drive from the sea
  • Lots of space for kids to play; three-minute walk to the local pub

A pretty paddock surrounded by fields on the edge of a village is the name of the game here: behind a greystone farmhouse in Dorset, the bell tents at Higher Lewell Farmhouse are settled comfortably away from the action.

The site is central to the Jurassic Coast's spectacular seas and cliffs, 20 minutes from Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door and under 40 minutes from Burton Bradstock, Charmouth, Lyme Regis, Chesil beach, Studland, Sandbanks, Swanage and Kimmeridge. It's also 20 minutes from Monkey World and the Tank Museum.

The exceptionally roomy field at Higher Lewell has plenty of parking space, heaps of room for kids to play in (using some of the treats in the site's box full of toys) and more than enough space for your outdoor furniture, barbecue and whatever else you decide to bring to furnish your new home.

In the field close to the pitches is a camping kitchen with a fridge/freezer, microwave, toaster, kettle and charging points for phones; crockery and cutlery are provided, along with tea, coffee and sugar. Two toilets and two showers (both plumbed into the mains) are up here too.

Friendly dogs are more than welcome, but the site owners require that visiting dogs are completely comfortable and happy with cats, chickens and other people and dogs.

If you're partial to a pint or want to know where you can relieve yourself of barbecue duties and tuck into some tasty pub grub, then you're in luck: Higher Lewell is a very handy three-minute walk from its nearest local inn, where you can enjoy a tipple or two alongside good meals, all while taking in some smashing sunset views out on the terrace. The pub can cook you breakfast if you want to tuck in before a day of Dorset sightseeing.

Slightly further afield, there are also heaps of good eats to be had around central Dorchester, with lots of popular big eateries around Brewery Square and takeaways aplenty. Several more restaurants and pubs are at Weymouth harbour, 15 minutes' drive away, and several more pubs serving food are within a 15-minute drive at most.

This campsite is very well looked after and has so many lovely little touches to make your stay that little extra special. The Bell tents are fantastic with the extra awning and there are tables and chairs/bench tables which you can use too.
There are great facilities to the site with a great little kitchen, which the fridge freezer was a great addition, and 2 showers and toilets which were all very clean.
The hosts (Sophia) was very welcoming and helpful with recommendations. She was also very good at keeping things the way she wanted them to be, as our fairy lights around the tent weren’t working one evening and she came to check them and then got them replaced the next day for us - Fantastic service and host with an eye for detail.
We enjoyed a fire pit every evening which was fantastic and our children loved the addition of the Yurt which is full of games to keep them busy as well as football goals and a swing ball.
Would recommend to anyone, as this is a small (7 bell tents) campsite with great amenities for all and is well located for exploring the fantastic county of Dorset.

Great experience and would highly recommend for families.

We booked a Bell tent in order to visit Portland, Weymouth and Durdle Door for my husband’s birthday with the children.

Facilities were very clean and well equipped. The kitchen area showers were great and the Bell tent was very clean (we noted a cleaner visit who was incredibly thorough). The Bell tents were reasonably spaced apart so didn’t feel like we were on top of our neighbours.

The location is very peaceful during the day and the hosts had been incredibly welcoming whilst ensuring they were available if needed. I am sure it was to their surprise when we experienced an incident with one of our boys who suffered an injury when bumping into his brother resulting in a very bloody laceration to his head. The hosts could not have been more supportive and helpful, providing support in getting us to the local A&E and then linking us up with a reliable taxi firm. They went above and beyond and were sincerely helpful.

The environment is friendly and hosts could not do enough to make us feel more welcome and provide a relaxing family atmosphere.

A solid 10/10, thank you for having us stay at your lovely site. We hope to visit again soon!

    The Read family.

We were staying with two other families (our friends) and their teens. We all had a really lovely stay. The location is perfectly located and the other guests were all really friendly. There is a decent pub a few minutes walk away. We were really lucky with the weather too. Facilities clean and practical, especially the kitchen with fridge, access to plugs and microwave. Wifi is decent too. It is all well lit so if you need a late night visit to the loos you can get there safely. Sophia was especially lovely to us all. There were games and a football net around the site for children and a washing line too.

    Disliked:

If you are a light sleeper recommend ear plugs as the cows are pretty vocal. The outdoor wash station could do with a cover should the weather be unpleasant.

Your hosts are more than happy to plan days out for you before and during your visit – they're big fans of Dorset and are keen for you to see as many of the best bits as you can during your stay, so have stocked up on plenty of maps, leaflets and even created their own sightseeing itineraries to help their guests get the most out of the their stay. For a spot of history, Dorset County Museum in Dorchester centre regales visitors with the history of the area's iconic Jurassic coast, and Dorset and Devon Military Museum provides smashing views over the landscape from the top of its keep. The stately home of Athelhampton House and Gardens is five miles from base, and the ruins of Corfe Castle lie a 20-minute drive away.

Other options are the biggest Iron Age hill fort in Europe, Maiden Castle two miles away; Thomas Hardy’s cottage and Max Gate (Thomas Hardy’s permanent home) both within five miles, and the Keep Military Museum in Dorchester, with spectacular views over the surrounding countryside.
