  • In an attractive harbour village two minutes' walk from the beach
  • Two miles from the market town of Bridport
  • Pool, paddling pool, adventure playground, climbing wall, bar and café
Dorset apple cake with clotted cream, spankingly fresh seafood, organic cheeses, sumptuous ice cream, lipsmacking local ales – no wonder so many people flock to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s old stamping ground. The first River Cottage TV shows were filmed at his smallholding near West Bay Holiday Park, where guests are perfectly placed to make the most of the farmers’ markets, restaurants and brewery tours in the pretty neighbouring town of Bridport on Dorset's Jurassic Coast. Don’t forget your bucket and spade: you can walk straight through the gates of the holiday park into West Bay’s scenic harbour and onto the stunning beach which goes on for miles. There’s no shortage of things to do on site either: wallowing about in the indoor pool, which has a separate toddlers’ pool with a slide, as well as a full-sized flume; there's also bike hire, nature trails, eclectic activities for preschoolers to teens in the well-organised kids’ clubs, a great adventure playground with a climbing wall, amusements, and free evening entertainment for the whole family in the Riverside Club. There are good basic amenities on site (including a launderette, shop and off licence, and a cash machine) as well as a bar and café with harbour views if you tire of the washing up.

Location was perfect. Loved the doggy assault course. Toilets and showers were very clean and a good water temperature.

Disliked: There was no original coke in any of the site bars, as I have an allergy to sweeteners I wasn't able to drink in the club.

Star FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: Lovely location, wardens (Andy and Dave) were so welcoming, nice size pitch and clean facilities.

Disliked: Quite a distance to swimming pool and club house. Although it is a dog friendly site you can only go onto wooden floor, the entertainment area is carpeted so couldn't go into entertainments. Very very disliked the travellers that decided to 'kick off' had the police in attendance then they stayed making lots of noise and total disruption.

Star FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: West Bay itself, walked to freshwater along the beach. Walked the hilly coast path to Charmouth. Both stunning. Public transport was good.

Disliked: Site itself was over ran with unruly guests. Site staff did little to help or reassure us. Police had to be called because of threats of violence arguing and disorder. Their dogs we’d not on leads or restrained and when one bit my dog I went to help him and was toppled over and fell in front of the park staff and they didn’t even come to see if I was okay. They just told the people to put their dog on a lead. I will not be returning.

Local attractions

Start on the doorstep in West Bay itself: you could go fossil hunting underneath the sandstone cliffs, crabbing in the harbour, take a boat tour of the Jurassic Coast, or head out into the big blue yonder on a sea fishing trip; then there’s golf, paragliding, scuba diving, watersports, and excellent walking along the coastal paths… Take a break from feeding yourself up on all the gorgeous local produce to hand feed the birds at Abbotsbury Swannery, where the 600 nesting mute swans make for an impressive sight (and plenty of hungry beaks); there are also award-winning gardens and a kids' farm to explore. The coastal resort of Lyme Regis has been drawing the crowds since time immemorial and is well worth a visit; other historical gems in West Dorset include the Jacobean manor house of Mapperton, set amongst topiary, terraced gardens and rolling hills; Forde Abbey and gardens; a cluster of castles; and the giant chalk man in the hillside at Cerne Abbas. Alternatively, if there are animal addicts in your party, they'll go ape for the 240-plus inhabitants of Monkey World and potty for the penguins and underwater specimens at Weymouth Sea Life Park.
