  • Friendly, spacious back-to-basics site in rural west Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive from Bridport and 20 from Lyme Regis
  • Eco-friendly site with an orchard, tyre swing and garden toys
Not a fan of being packed in with hundreds of other guests? Pilsdon View Camping owners Terry and April are in full agreement with this point of view – they’ve got seven acres to play with here, but they like to keep numbers low to make sure there’s plenty of space for ball games, barbecues, campfires and stargazing (all essential aspects of a trip to the countryside, they suggest…) That approach and the mighty friendly welcome on offer have earned a huge stack of rave reviews for this rural Dorset site 10 minutes’ drive from Bridport. And there are plaudits for the location too, in a scenic spot with the river Char running alongside and easy access to several footpaths and bike tracks for rural explores. The owners are doing their level best to preserve that special environment, giving over part of the site to an orchard and growing lots of their own herbs and veggies in the garden (and asking dog owners to keep their furry pals on a lead so they don’t rampage through any of the above and clean up any doings). Kids can roam fairly freely around this site, playing with the garden toys and tyre swing or setting up their own games; don’t worry about them getting mucky, as there are gas-powered showers to take care of clean-up time. Toilets, a fresh water supply and a washing-up area are also in place close to the pitches field. Mobile phone and device charging is available for a small fee. Please note that as this is a family site, guests are expected to fall quiet after dark (no amplified music or other noise nuisance will be allowed).

Bell tent

Liked We stayed here for 2 nights over the bank holiday weekend and really enjoyed our stay. The campsite has a very chilled, relaxed vibe and friendly owners who take their time to tell you everything you need to know. The welcome gift of a bag of marshmallows to toast on the camp fires provided was very thoughtful. They also offer wood for £5 for a generous amount.
Facilities very clean with warm water.
Our son loved the tyre swing and the playground but there is also lots of space for kids to run around and play. We would definitely stay here again when exploring this part of Dorset.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked The site - small fields separated by hedges and fences. The clean, hot showers. Peaceful easy going site. Campfires. Enough space. Quiet nights. The coast is very nearby. The site is next to cycle and hiking routes. Terry and April, who are relaxed hosts, who work hard at keeping the campsite a beautiful place for their two and four legged visitors.

Bell tent

Liked Everything! A lovely friendly welcome. All you need from a site. Good quality, clean shower and toilet facilities. Spacious and clean area to wash up those pots and pans. Numerous fresh water points to fill the kettle and have a brew. A beautiful, quiet setting to relax in. Lots of outdoor toys and equipment for the kids to use, and a play park for them to burn off some energy. Delicious and affordable food on site morning and evening from the brilliant Jurassic Pork!

This is our second visit, and we will be back.

Local attractions

Might you have seen the cliffs of West Bay before? It’s quite possible if you ever watched Broadchurch, as they played something of a starring role in the telly series. They’re even better viewed in real life though, so it’s worth making the 15-minute drive to see them for yourself. Lyme Regis (20 minutes’ drive) is another fine choice for a day by the sea – mackerel fishing trips head out from the harbour, and there may well be fossils lurking on the beach (and if there aren’t any presenting themselves, you can see what other folk have found at the town’s Dinosaurland Museum). In fact, pretty much the whole stretch of coast here is worth a visit, so strolls on the South West Coast Path are highly recommended. The scenery extends under the surface too, with the 2,000-year-old Beer Quarry Caves (35 minutes) certainly meriting a detour. Away from the coast, Axe Valley Wildlife Park and Mapperton House and Gardens are both within 20 minutes’ drive, as are a couple of vineyards and cider producers for guests of a particular vintage.
