  • Dog-friendly, adults-only couples’ country retreat in rural Dorset
  • A 10-minute drive from Charmouth and 15 to Lyme Regis and West Bay
  • Walking paths to the beach from the site; pub a five-minute stroll
Whether your pastime is active or more laidback, Hobby Farm in Marshwood Vale has you covered. Like a bit of walking? Set in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this site’s got that in spades. Prefer relaxing? As an adults-only park with a low-key atmosphere, this pretty place is wondrously peaceful… The site’s also a 10-minute drive to the famous fossil beach in Charmouth (for hunting dino remains) and footpaths connecting to the coast from here mean you can roam on down through the green countryside in about an hour and a quarter. If Fido fancies a break you can bring him as well: dogs are welcome at Hobby Farm. For beaches with a bit of bustle, West Bay and Lyme Regis’ restaurants, bars and boutiques are less than a 10-minute drive away, and if guests are hankering after eats closer by a pub serving grub is about a five-minute walk up the lane. A supermarket’s less than a 15-minute drive away for supplies if you're aiming for alfresco cooking (and barbecues are allowed back on base). If legs still have a little life left in them, Stonebarrow Hill (a 10-minute drive) has 25 miles’ worth of trails around Golden Cap. Factor in a stop uphill for vistas of Lyme Bay over to Dartmoor, then keep going to Langdon Hill-Wood via Smugglers’ Trail. Or carry yourself off towards the cliffs for the old Thorncombe Beacon and views of Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of England’s longest shingle shorelines.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Overall lovely site, beautiful location, sufficient facilities for the size of the site, even though it was full didn’t have to wait for anything at any point, always hot water for showers and washing up. About as close to wild camping as you can get but with all the convenience still there. Beautiful circular walk to Charmouth beach and just generally stunning surroundings! Will definitely be back, really enjoyed staying here!

Disliked A few small issues let the site down slightly (nothing that would stop me coming back but small things that would make the site 10/10)

A good clean of the buildings the facilities are in would be a huge improvement, while the actual loos and such are clean the sheer amount of old cobwebs and detritus was a bit of a disappointment, a quick whip round with a brush could massively improve this!

Some of the showers could benefit from some simple TLC, doors putting back on runners, new shower head holders, just little things to make them better to use.

And a loo roll holder would be great rather than the rolls getting wasted ending up in the sinks wet because they’ve fallen off the various random perches people are trying to use.

Lovely small rural site with good facilities and good price point.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked So peaceful, flat pitches, some with shade which was welcome! Surrounded by nature - had a visit from duck and ducklings and could hear the peacocks calling! Very quiet when I visited and toilets, showers and washing up area were very clean. Free WiFi had very good coverage. Dog walks from site, including a bustling pub, and short drive to nearby beaches. I loved it here and will return.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Pitches were separated by hedges. Nice views. Had basic amenities.

Disliked Showers basic, door not good on one shower, didn't try other. Shower head pole very loose and shower head kept falling down. Showers in need of a refurb.
Toilet hand towel holder doors kept opening themselves and nearly hit you in the face/bang your head on them when getting up from the loo.
We also had a noisy neighbour playing bagpipes/accordion very badly whilst we were eating our evening meal so we had to ask them to be quiet a couple of times.
Washing machine drums as fire pits looked a mess especially as they still had the plastic on the back. We thought someone had left them behind to claim their spaces.

Lovely jubbly

Route directions

Coming along Blunts Road from Ryall, pass Hobby Farm (the equestrian stables) and look for the next turning on the right to find the site. It's better to use the Google Maps location for Hobby Farm Holidays to find the exact spot rather than using the postcode. If coming from the A303 and Crewkerne, after Bettiscombe, your satnav may suggest going down a bridleway to Mandeville Stoke Farm. Don't take this turning but carry straight on instead.

Local attractions

Book as much time as you can off work, as this area’s brimming with things to do. Quirky times can be had at Lyme Regis’ crazy golf course on the promenade, while boat trips are available from West Bay to see beaches from a watery vantage point. Meanwhile, museums like Dinosaurland Fossil (15 minutes' drive) will school you on what puts the Jurassic into the Jurassic Coast. For country houses with a twist, former Cistercian monastery Forde Abbey is a 20-minute drive or you can journey an hour into the countryside past Yeovil for Sherborne Castle. Car enthusiasts can have a gander at the Haynes Motor Museum near this 16th-century Tudor mansion, some 50 minutes from Hobby Farm. Back towards the coast, town times are top in Sidmouth, 40 minutes east by car, with its Regency houses, botanical gardens and donkey sanctuary. Heading in the other direction will take you to the Hardy Monument on Black Down within 35 minutes for views of the West Dorset Heritage Coast from way up high.
