Views of Exmoor National Park

  • Well-maintained dog-friendly farm site just outside South Molton
  • A 20-minute drive to Exmoor National Park; 30 minutes to Barnstaple
  • Firepit for hire and wood to purchase; barbecues permitted
Put your faith in the bridleway and follow it into Pearchay Farm Camping, where you can share the soil with gently grazing cows, sheep and horses. At the foot of several public footpaths and just outside of the market town of South Malton, pitch up this peaceful working farm retreat for a well-maintained base that will open up a web of rural rambles in the Devon countryside and nearby Exmoor National Park, 20 minutes’ drive away. Handily, you won’t need to wave goodbye to the sea either, as this natural haven is half an hour’s drive from Barnstaple and just under an hour’s drive from the sandy-stripped north Devon coast for surfing, paddleboarding and all manner of watersports. Hire a large firepit and purchase wood on site for a campfire or stack up the meat on the grill for an end-of-the day barbecue, as both are permitted on site. Just don't forget to put aside the grizzly bits for your dog if you have one, as they’re also welcome on the site on a lead. If you're still hungry, you can hunker down for local food and beers in several pubs and restaurants within 10 minutes’ drive and pick up extra rations in a couple of food shops within 10 minutes’ drive.

Ready tent

Liked Myself,my partner and two children stayed at Pearchay Farm for a week and we cannot fault it.
We chose an already erected tent which is an absolute game changer for camping lovers with little patience to set up a big tent with all the tricky poles included.
We arrived after the owner gave us the exact location via the what3words app- genius! And we were ready to unpack and go!
We had all the basic needs, table and chairs, fire pit+fire wood (at an extra cost) crockery and cuttlery and a kettle and 2 pans.
The rooms were set up with a bed in each room.
All we needed was ourselves, food and pillows/blankets.
It was only us on the campsite, which while nice to have it to ourselves, we would of equally welcomed fellow campers to interact with, however the serenity and privacy of being just us was lovely- however our week was abit wet but thats just luck of the draw!
The toilet and shower facilities were spotlessly clean and the shower was powerful and hot which is always a bonus.
We thoroughly enjoyed the local walks from the campsite too.
The owner was extremely welcoming and helpful and we would love to come back should be holiday in Devon again!
Overall we really enjoyed our stay, it is what i call back to basics camping, no electric (however wifi was good) and there is no 'activities' for the kids, but i think it depends on what your looking for in a holiday- my kids (11 and 7) were more than happy with our nature walks, riding their bikes around the field, playing field games (frisbee, boules etc) and board games and painting stones we found on walks/at the beach! As well as a campfire on the evening to enjoy their marshmallows.

Disliked Nothing at all to dislike.

Liked Farm field campsite with the most amazing view and peaceful location.
Plenty of good level pitches, good toilet and shower unit with instant hot water and nice posh rainfall showers with additional normal shower head.
The proprietors are very welcoming and helpful.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked I stayed 1 night here with my Dad and brother and sister as a Father’s Day present and it was lovely. Such a good site with amazing views. We booked 2 pitches and as we were the only ones we could go wherever. We were offered logs and a fire pit for only £5 which was so good as we didn’t have enough wood. The toilets were clean but the showers were a bit dusty and cobwebs around. Unfortunately the electric was not working that evening but a quick message to the Facebook and Owen was down to fix it immediately so we had lights and warm water for the next morning. We would definitely be back as the peace and quiet with minimal but good amenities was perfect.

Local attractions

Fresh pasties, collectibles and antiques… South Molton (15 minutes’ drive) is a historical market town with sweet treats and locally grown produce for perusal. A town-based home to one of the largest collections of honeybees in the UK, you’ll want to stop by Quince Honey Farm (15 minutes) and its soft play area, shop and restaurant for a stickily sweet time. At nearby Knightshayes National Trust (20 minutes), alternate between the Victorian house, formal gardens and the spacious outdoor space. Slightly further afield, Arlington Court (40 minutes) has more fanciful gardens, horse-drawn carriages and tea rooms. Handily, the north Devon coast is also within reach. Saunton Sands (50 minutes) has an impressive stretch of sand and waves fit for wakeboarding and paddleboarding. Stop by the curvaceous Baggy Point (an hour) as you rise over the cliffs and descend into its neighbouring Woolacombe beach (an hour), surfers’ favourite. Inland, at Exmoor National Park (20 minutes), walk among herds of ponies on the moors and pack a picnic for a scenic stop along the way. With wildlife spotting on the brain, you can find a greater portion of the animal world residing in Exmoor Zoo (half an hour) too.
