  • Peaceful alpaca farm in a rural setting
  • Small and quiet family-owned site
  • Eco-friendly and sustainable project
What a smashing little site this is – and might you have surmised from the name that exotic animals will be wandering around too...? Welcome to Moonacre Alpacas, a small and sustainable farm in the Devon countryside with its own herd of around 30 fluffy and friendly Huacaya alpacas. (So you can arrive on site impressively armed with knowledge, the Huacaya is one of the two main alpaca breeds and normally lives on the Altiplano plateau in the Andes.) Glamping guests also have access to a small lake on site, which is often visited by the resident flock of ducks. Walking and cycling routes including the Tarka Trail are easily accessed in the surrounding countryside; for fishing, carp and coarse angling lakes are half a mile away. As well as providing peaceful holidays among scenic countryside, the team at Moonacre is also also keen to promote sustainability and eco tourism, and have added eco toilets as well as separate shower facilities and toilets. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed. Moonacre is about 20 minutes from Dartmoor and half an hour from the Devon coast. It's a mile and a half from the local shop and three miles from the pubs, restaurants and shops of the villages of Winkleigh and Dolton.

Route directions

Moonacre Farm is off the A3124 between Winkleigh and Torrington. From Winkleigh follow the A3124 for about 3 miles towards Torrington and take the left turn signposted for Stafford Moor Fisheries. Carry on this road for 1/2 mile past the fisheries and the site is on the left (you will see a large new barn on the left with post and rail fencing and a five bar gate which is set back). Please don't trust your Satnav once you take the turning to Stafford Moor Fisheries, just stay on the road. The Satnav will take you a mile out of your way and to another farm.

Local attractions

Some lovely land lies around this part of Devon, for strolls and hikes as well as bike rides and vineyards, moors and coast, old houses and green gardens. A 35-lake coarse and carp fishery with its own tackle and bait shop and catches of over 30lb is half a mile up the road. Plenty of walking and cycling paths are easy to access from here, including the famed Tarka Trail, following the supposed path made by Henry Williamson's eponymous otter in an 180-mile loop around north Devon. A section of the trail makes up part of National Cycle Network  27 and the 99-mile Devon Coast to Coast Cycle Route from Ilfracombe to Plymouth. More hiking and cycling, as well horse riding, climbing and piles more outdoor options are at Dartmoor, about 20 minutes from the farm. You can drive to here via Moonacre's traditional local village of Winkleigh, onto Okehampton, and then to Belstone, right on the edge of the moor and the sinister setting for Agatha Christie's The Sittaford Mystery. Going towards the coast, Westward Ho! and Saunton Sands are under 20 miles away. For gardens, the farm is within a 10-minute drive of RHS Rosemoor. The Moonacre team also recommends Great Torrington, a 12-minute drive away and home to an arts centre with cinema, bar and café for day and evening refreshments and meals.
