Moonacre Alpacas: Alpacas near the bell tent

General

  • Peaceful alpaca farm in a rural setting
  • Small and quiet family-owned site
  • Eco-friendly and sustainable project

What a smashing little site this is – and might you have surmised from the name that exotic animals will be wandering around too...?

Welcome to Moonacre Alpacas, a small and sustainable farm in the Devon countryside with its own herd of around 30 fluffy and friendly Huacaya alpacas. (So you can arrive on site impressively armed with knowledge, the Huacaya is one of the two main alpaca breeds and normally lives on the Altiplano plateau in the Andes.)

Glamping guests also have access to a small lake on site, which is often visited by the resident flock of ducks. Walking and cycling routes including the Tarka Trail are easily accessed in the surrounding countryside; for fishing, carp and coarse angling lakes are half a mile away.

As well as providing peaceful holidays among scenic countryside, the team at Moonacre is also also keen to promote sustainability and eco tourism, and have added eco toilets as well as separate shower facilities and toilets. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed.

Moonacre is about 20 minutes from Dartmoor and half an hour from the Devon coast. It's a mile and a half from the local shop and three miles from the pubs, restaurants and shops of the villages of Winkleigh and Dolton.

Overall a great area, stunning and a lot of work has been put in.09/10/2020

The area is stunning, peaceful and away from other tents. It was clean, tidy and well thought out. The owners were both lovely and had a genuine warmness. She showed us around and to out tent, the alpacas which were so interesting to watch. The tent was right next to their paddock and was great to eat breakfast next to them. The facilities were well thought out if a little basic, i will cover this in dislikes. But are a work in progress and are still very cool and eco friendly. The tent was well equipped although i will cover this more in dislikes.

Kitchen area is great in the good weather and well equipped with a gas stove and plates and everything you will need.

Fire pit is a great touch. Bring logs and it is a lovely way to spend the evening.

A personal touch often ignored by chain or bigger places was to gift us a pack of marshmallows to have on the fire. So thoughtful.

The surrounding area is lovely and just needs a bit of work but with just the 2 of them it must be a lot.

Overall i would stay again and love to see its progression 5 years down the line.

    Disliked:

Now firstly i didnt dislike anything. The following points are only things that are very much by the looks of it a work in progress.

Toilets are and eco style dunny hut. Now im ex military and will go in a hole, but they are a bit too hardcore for some. Maybe a little more work on them could make them less fearful for some.

The bottom tent area we stayed it was very muddy and water logged. Weather was nice but this was run off from the sloped field and unavoidable of course. Moving the tent is an issue due to the fixed’ish kitchen and dunny but the area was a so muddy it was a bit of a shame.

The shower was very well thought out but was a gas run shower in a cool converted horse box. It was cold and need to be warmer. I know this is hard to achieve given its limitations but i after seeing how cool it was and genius i thought the build was, it being freezing was devastating after a night on the rum.

Alison and Phil were great hosts. The emails with links and instructions prior to our trip were excellent and made sure the Bell tent was clean and well equiped. The eco loo clean and had plenty of toilet roll and Hay. The kitchen area was well protected from the rain the surrounding fields were a welcome retreat every day. Would definately recommend for anyone looking at a camping trip with a difference.

The kids loved the Chickens and Alpacas'...happy memories. Thank you.

The bell tent, kitchen facilities and the eco toilets (different to what we'd experienced before).

There was bedding available but we bought our own and were happy we did.

The tent stood up well to the strong winds and rain we experienced, but being situated at the base of a hill the surrounding area became quite boggy.

The farm looks like further development is planned so there could be further improvements in line for the future.

    Disliked:

The experience overall was okay for us but there were a few items that left us disappointed:
    - there were 4 alpacas in total, but they were not in the field next to our tent (or the next tent along).
    - no opportunity to engage with the alpacas, no feeding, walking etc.. which the kids were really disappointed with
    - shower was unreliable, often cold water only

Directions

Moonacre Farm is off the A3124 between Winkleigh and Torrington. From Winkleigh follow the A3124 for about 3 miles towards Torrington and take the left turn signposted for Stafford Moor Fisheries. Carry on this road for 1/2 mile past the fisheries and the site is on the left (you will see a large new barn on the left with post and rail fencing and a five bar gate which is set back). Please don't trust your Satnav once you take the turning to Stafford Moor Fisheries, just stay on the road. The Satnav will take you a mile out of your way and to another farm.

Local attractions

Some lovely land lies around this part of Devon, for strolls and hikes as well as bike rides and vineyards, moors and coast, old houses and green gardens. A 35-lake coarse and carp fishery with its own tackle and bait shop and catches of over 30lb is half a mile up the road.

Plenty of walking and cycling paths are easy to access from here, including the famed Tarka Trail, following the supposed path made by Henry Williamson's eponymous otter in an 180-mile loop around north Devon. A section of the trail makes up part of National Cycle Network  27 and the 99-mile Devon Coast to Coast Cycle Route from Ilfracombe to Plymouth.

More hiking and cycling, as well horse riding, climbing and piles more outdoor options are at Dartmoor, about 20 minutes from the farm. You can drive to here via Moonacre's traditional local village of Winkleigh, onto Okehampton, and then to Belstone, right on the edge of the moor and the sinister setting for Agatha Christie's The Sittaford Mystery.

Going towards the coast, Westward Ho! and Saunton Sands are under 20 miles away. For gardens, the farm is within a 10-minute drive of RHS Rosemoor. The Moonacre team also recommends Great Torrington, a 12-minute drive away and home to an arts centre with cinema, bar and café for day and evening refreshments and meals.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (12.4 kilometers)
  • Castle Drogo (24.1 kilometers)
