  • Simple grass pitches on a rugby field in Newton Abbot, Devon
  • A 20-minute drive to Torquay Beach and Dartmoor National Park
  • Bar and eatery in the clubhouse; pubs and shops five minutes’ drive
Well, you’re certainly guaranteed flat grass pitches when you book a camping break at Devon’s Newton Abbot Rugby Club, for the very good reason that the campsite doubles as the rugby field – and it’s only open to the camping world during the summer off-season. Happily the site is kid-friendly, with lots of space for kicking a ball around, and dog-friendly too, with lots of waterside walks along the River Teign bordering the grounds. They may not have electric hook-ups, but the pitches do have some handy amenities: wifi reception to stop any teenage grumbling; gas cylinders and recycling available; hot showers and loos (including disabled facilities) located in the clubhouse, and of course, you can use the club’s bar and dining services whenever it’s open. For the occasions when the clubhouse remains shut, barbecues are allowed on the pitches; pick up supplies from the superstore five minutes’ walk away. If you’d rather rely on someone else to do the catering while you’re on holiday, pop into Newton Abbot (five minutes’ drive) and surf its cluster of pubs, restaurants and takeaways. Please be aware there may be other events running at the clubhouse during your stay, such as band nights, family fun days and comedy shows.

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Disliked it all

Disliked: Shocking site. Told by a group of campers on a radio controlled car rally to camp away from them. People playing rugby on the field so could not camp anywhere as advertised. Gate was locked at 9pm after we came back from dinner and my one legged wife struggled over the gate. Shocking site. Looked on pitch up the next day to see that the campsite was no longer taking any bookings.

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Nice to spend a night. Not sure if it’s good to stay longer. Probably good if you’d like to watch rugby matches.

Disliked: No much info on the actual site about staying. Was confused where to put camper van. Not easy to get to water supply to refill water tank in camper van. Toilet and shower are in one room so if someone inside the room you can’t use any of them. No info about rubbish bags facilities.

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Fairly cheap

Disliked: It's not really a campsite. We were put on a piece of grass in the corner with lots of rubbish and far away from the only toilet and shower available to use, which didn't work great anyway. There were Rugby training and matches on the same field as us during the stay, which we did not know about beforehand.

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Flat pitch and quiet area. Location in town. Easy to find.

Disliked: States as toilets and showers. However, you will need to walk a half a mile to get there. In reality there is one toilet and one shower with toilet cubicle at the central building. Even six portaloos next to the building. Was not mentioned about it on the website. Drinking water over there too. Staying in little tent is more expensive than staying in campervan or caravan, I wonder why?
