  • Off-grid pitches right by the beach on the South Devon Heritage Coast
  • Five minutes' walk to South Milton Sands; 10 mins' drive to Salcombe
  • Honesty shop and simple kitchen facilities on site; dogs welcome
Well, this is a cool location indeed… Cool Cow Camping is part of a traditional farm in the stunning South Hams, with views out to sea and the lovely beach of South Milton Sands about five minutes’ walk away. Cows get a mention in the site’s name as they’ll be your nearest neighbours, living in the next-door field. As for your own field, it’s got spacious off-grid pitches with access to simple (and eco-friendly) facilities including compost toilets, gas-heated showers and a communal kitchen with a food prep area, fridge/freezer access and washing-up sinks (you’ll need to bring your own cooking kit, however). There’s also a spring water supply that guests can use (but please note that it’s untested and therefore not proven to be safe for drinking; bottled water is likely to be a safer bet). Picnics, takeaways and other alfresco meals on site come with sea views as standard, and you can pick up certain supplies for these from the site’s honesty shop (think locally sourced meat, bread, dairy and other essentials). You may also like to explore some of the area’s other options for local food and drinks – perhaps ambling along the coast path to the neighbouring villages of Hope Cove and Thurlestone for pubs, cafés and village shops or setting out for the longer walk to Bolberry or Bantham for more dining options. For days out, activities and yet more places to eat, you might like to try Kingsbridge and Salcombe (both about 10 minutes’ drive) or seek out city attractions in Plymouth (45 minutes).

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful views. Good facilities. Quiet campsite

Disliked The pitch we were on we were in a corner pitch which meant we were rather close to next door. However we were all quiet so no problem!

Highly recommend

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Stunning views. Location to south Milton sands beach a short walk, dog friendly beach and national trust car park. Our first experience of composting toilets and I have to say very hygienic and no smells. Equally the showers are excellent , powerful and hot. Washing up area and honesty shop also excellent. Great value

Disliked We were allocated pitch 35 which is in the corner of the field , would suggest this is removed as the space is too small , 34 , 35 and 36 in particular on top of each other. Fine for one night though and lovely quiet neighbours so was fine.

Value for money is tip top. We had a wonderful time and felt no stress

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The location is amazing! Beautiful dog friendly beach round the corner and the field had lovely farm views. Eco facilities were clean and the little check in area with fridge for campers use was a bonus!

Disliked The pitches seem quite close together and so if it was busy that could feel less relaxing. Oddly 4 campers were put next to each other when the whole field was empty! They relocated a couple promptly when realised not together but be nice to have a few pitches in between separate bookings where possible given can’t choose your own pitch.

Clean facilities, very good prices in shop, gorgeous view

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The location, facilities and view
Loved the short walk to hope cove and the beach
Very good toilets

Disliked Pitches are quite close together, marshmallows should be added to the shop, very loud toilet doors banging and no locks on the shower but wasn’t actually a problem

Amazing location. Absolutely perfect. Had everything we needed.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Toilet cleanliness *****
Honesty shop
Lovely owner
Spacious hot showers
Great view over South Milton Sands Beach
Highland Cows in the adjacent field
Distance to local pubs, shops and coastal walks
Cleanliness of the site
Perfectly priced
Clear instructions on what is and isn’t provided.

Site had everything we needed. It’s clearly explained what is and isn’t provided and for the price you get way more than other sites at higher price. For us absolutely no need to pay £40+ PN elsewhere especially when self contained. Need more sites like this in the UK.

Site is nicely laid out and the owner visits each day. Very helpful.

Added to our top 5 uk sites to revisit based on site location, things to do nearby and price point.

100% would recommend even if not self contained.

Disliked Couldn’t lock shower doors but shower curtains inside, so not enough of an issue to ruin or downrate our stay. 10 star as cannot fault

Will visit again

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked I had a truly lovely experience at the cool cow Campsite. One of the standout features was just how close the site is to the sea, no hills to climb, just a gentle stroll to the shoreline, which made it feel like a real hidden gem. The honesty shop was surprisingly well stopped, offering everything I needed without a fuss. I also really appreciated how clean and well maintained the toilets and shower facilities were, they clearly take pride in keeping the place tidy and welcoming. All in all, this was a relaxing, hassle free stay in a gorgeous location. I’d happily return and recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful coastal escape!
In short utterly brilliant! This is a site that really lives up to its name, with chilled out vibes, down to earth charm, and a coastal setting so close you can almost hear the cows moo in the Seabreeze harmony.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We arrived and just drove in a pitched where we wanted ! There were no allocation pitches! Everything was done on trust!

Disliked There were not really any flat pitches that were free luckily it wasn’t too busy so we found the flattest pitch and set up there! We have a tent box so need flat for that!

Plenty of room to pitch tent. Everything you need is there.

Local attractions

First stop from here should surely be South Milton Sands – it’ll take you only five minutes or so to stroll down there to relax on the golden sands or poke around in the rockpools. There’s a watersports centre down there too, so you can hire paddleboards and kayaks or have someone give you lessons in how to use them. Elsewhere along the coast there are of course some excellent walks to be had on the South West Coast Path, and it’s worth planning visits to Bigbury-on-Sea (25 minutes’ drive) for a visit to Burgh Island and Salcombe (10 minutes) for a gin tasting and a tour of Overbeck’s Garden. Nearby Thurlestone (15 minutes' drive/half an hour's coastal walk) has a golf course and a lovely spa too. Away from the coast, you may like to take the kids to Pennywell Farm (25 minutes) for activities like lamb feeding and goat milking, or to spy more exotic beasts at Dartmoor Zoo (40 minutes). Meanwhile, Plymouth (45 minutes) has attractions like the National Marine Aquarium and The Box interactive museum.
