Around the site

  • Peaceful coastal site in Exmoor National Park with sea views
  • Combe Martin and Ilfracombe within a 10-minute drive
  • Private footpath to pub, coast path and Watermouth Castle
If you like a sea view, find it handy to be able to get out and about without driving and are rather partial to a freshly baked pastry, you should be pretty pleased with the offerings at Little Meadow Caravan and Camping Site. This small and quiet site is up on the north Devon coast within Exmoor National Park, and one of its top selling points is the fact that it’s got gorgeous sweeping views over the Bristol Channel in one direction and Exmoor’s Hangman Hills in the other. The grounds have been cleverly terraced to make the most of that coastal outlook, and the views have been boosted further with flower-filled borders all around. Getting out to explore the area is easily done here – the site is accessed from the A399 for drivers and there’s also a handy bus stop a couple of minutes’ walk away for jaunts to places like Ilfracombe and Combe Martin. Meanwhile, a private 500-metre footpath leads from the site to Watermouth Castle, where crossing the road takes you on to the South West Coast Path. Back on site, you’ll be staying in a peaceful spot with abundant wildlife – keep your eyes peeling for badgers, rabbits, buzzards and sea birds, as well as porpoises out at sea. There’s a good list of useful facilities too, including a play area, a dog park, a laundry room and a local information point as well as men’s and women’s bathroom facilities. And those pastries? Freshly baked croissants and baguettes are available on site every morning, and the shop stocks locally sourced jams, meats and drinks. Barbecues are permitted, and there’s a pub half a mile away.

What customers say

A lovely, tranquil campsite offering gorgeous ocean vistas. Praised for spotless facilities, welcoming staff, and ample space. Minor notes: spotty WiFi, a challenging entrance for large rigs, and slow shower heat. Manager is on top of grass and play areas.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Lovely site, with views over Ilfracombe Bay. Clean facilities and peaceful site.

Disliked Not a dislike, just to be aware, the top tiers of the site have a steep walk up. Difficult if your mobility or fitness isn't great.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The toilets and showers were very clean. The view from top of camp site was amazing

Disliked Once you sit in your camping chair, you don't see much of the view, in fact you do you see anything apart from some bushes.

Also, there is no playground for kids.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your kind words but sorry you didn’t see the view from your pitch sitting down on your camping chair.

I do hope you come again and please get any of the team to show you the childrens play area -it’s just along from the shower block and at the moment you can also see the lambs in the field adjacent.

Liked Nice campsite lovely views across Ilfracombe

Disliked Up hill from toilet block and pitches not true hardstanding

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I am glad you enjoyed the panoramic views which come from the high position of the site.

As we are a terraced site overlooking the sea on a hill set on an organic farm it does mean that you do have to walk up a gradient. We do provide pitches closer to the shower block for those with mobility issues.

We endeavour to reduce our impact on the beautiful natural environment and have chosen to use shillet which is the local natural stone rather than concrete or tarmac. This is also in keeping with us being an uncommercial site.

Liked location staff and cleanlyness of the site it was well organised and recyling is at the forefront of the site it was well layed out to allow easy disposal of your rubbish in a responsible manner

Disliked disliked the sharp turn to get into the campsite, but it is what it is and is not that bad, And the only other thing that i disliked which is far beyond the control of the sire was the chainsaw choir that sang out loud from about 9pm til 2:45am! (if only i had remembered my earplugs). So really and truthfully there were no dislikes that could be addressed by anyone else but myself!!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hello - glad you enjoyed the site and our amenities but disappointed that you found the turning difficult and that you had a 'chainsaw choir' during the night between 9pm to 2.45pm - I didn't receive any other complaints of noise for that evening so hoping you could contact me to let me know what happened.

If it was in fact during the daytime we are in a rural location and husbandry of the environment is essential at this verdantly, fast growing time of the year. Sadly we are not all on holiday :-)

Liked Fantastic location high above Watermouth Harbour and easy walk down path avoiding the narrow road. Handy for buses to Ilfracombe and Combe Martin . Very friendly and helpful staff and nice shop with the basics such as milk and freshly baked croissants. There is a beautiful sycamore tree to shelter under in recent hot weather, and some shade elsewhere, depending on the pitch. We appreciated the no music policy.

Disliked The showers were a bit disappointing. They were not very powerful and tended to run cold for quite a while and then sometimes got very hot, with no way to control the temperature.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Glad youl loved the site and the big tree.

As we are at the top of a hill in a rural location water pressure at this time of year with so many visitors in the area (the population quadruples) it is hard to maintain a water pressure that you might be more used to in urban areas. When the showers have not been used it does take a few minutes for the hot water to reach the showers. There is a temperature control valve on the system however in this abnormally hot weather the water can seem hotter/

Great site, its a quiet site and there is a small area with swings .

Liked What a fantastic site. Well positioned between Ilfracombe and Combe Martin, accessible to the SWCP for hikers. A pub and cafe within a short walk from the site also.
The owner was lovely and helpful as was the other lady in the reception area.

Disliked Nothing to not like really. Only thing was athe showers are on a slow release button so you constantly have to push it in again for the flow to continue but i do appreciate its that way for a reason!

Route directions

Satnav is not the most reliable way to find this site; please use these instructions instead. The entrance is best approached from the Ilfracombe direction due to a sharp turn into the driveway when approaching from Combe Martin, which can be very difficult for anyone in a large campervan or motorhome or towing a caravan or trailer. If you arrive from Combe Martin you can turn around in the Hele Bay Garage which is a mile along the road. The driveway signed Lydford Farm is NOT the entrance to the campsite. If you are towing a caravan please let the site know in advance if you are driving a four-wheel drive car. Little Meadow is on the 301 bus route.

Local attractions

With water gardens, vintage arcade games, a big river ride and lots of other fun activities – plus the castle itself, of course – Watermouth Castle has plenty to offer for all sorts of tastes. And as it’s only a 15-minute walk from the site you should certainly drop in there at some point. After that, maybe the rockpools of Combe Martin beach (five minutes’ drive), a wild time at Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (10 minutes) or an outing to Ilfracombe (10 minutes) for the Tunnels beaches and Lundy boat trips? Woolacombe (25 minutes) is another popular beach – especially for surfers – and there are excellent coast walks around Valley of Rocks (35 minutes). Family days out might take you to Exmoor Zoo (20 minutes) or The Big Sheep (45 minutes); more grownup options nearby include Marwood Hill Gardens (20 minutes), National Trust - Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (25 minutes) and the gorgeous RHS Garden Rosemoor (55 minutes).
