  • Bell tents on a boutique glamping site in the Blackdown Hills
  • A 35-minute drive to Lyme Regis and Charmouth on the Jurassic Coast
  • Site spa with a sauna and hydrotherapy showers; in-tent woodburners
How about a boutique bell tent for your Blackdown Hills hideaway? A 35-minute drive from Lyme Regis and Charmouth on the stunning geology of the Jurassic Coast, this dog-friendly east Devon site is well-suited for days fossil-hunting on the coast or horse riding in the hills. Being a boutique luxury glamping site, the bell tents are high on creature comforts too… What might these be? Well, there are private shower and loo areas for each bell tent (odourless incinerating loos, no less) and ecologically efficient in-tent woodburners fuelled by sustainably-sourced wood from the site’s own land. The site’s other eco credentials include solar-powered electricity, which supplies multiple USB outlets and inductive charging. There are also hardwood kingsize beds, Egyptian cotton sheets and sprung mattresses, all adorned with oriental décor (the interiors have been carefully designed to a high standard). All cooking equipment, crockery and cutlery are kindly supplied too. The highlight? Well, perhaps the spa facilities on site. The spa has hydrotherapy showers with monsoon, hand shower and body jet options, a woodfired sauna, showers with colour therapy and speakers with Bluetooth connectivity. Still, you won’t forget what a gorgeous natural setting this is. Part of a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the glamping site is in a seven-acre field and part of a private woodland with 16 untouched acres. Guests are very welcome to explore, forage and photograph. There are walks in all directions and the closest neighbour is the Hartridge Buddhist Monastery, accessible by the public through the property’s woodland.

Emperor bell tent

Liked: Super comfortable bed with luxury bedding and towels. Log burner was an excellent addition as the evenings starting to get chilly. Own private pitch with pretty fairy lights and cooking essentials provided. Really friendly host. Free quad bike ride during the orientation :)

Disliked: Seemed a little unorganised and a few things missing. All was rectified in the end but as it was raining on arrival, a cup of tea and lighting the Fire would have been wonderful. Unfortunately no firewood or milk supplied until much later. The spa facilities seemed to be over sold, only 2 toilets for site & shared showers (advertised as own bathroom) plus the sauna was a DIY process and required a fire to be lit/wait for it to heat up before use.

Local attractions

If it’s watersports you’re after, make haste for Lyme Bay (40 minutes’ drive), where boat trips and watersports of all sorts take place. For fossil hunting hubs, Lyme Regis (35 minutes) and Charmouth (35 minutes) are excellent bets. For those who’d like to take in the scenery from a bird's-eye view, there are hot air balloon tours or flying and gliding lessons both 25 minutes’ drive away. Go-karting takes place at Mansell Raceway (25 minutes) for those who’d like to tear up the tracks a little. Active glamper? Track down a running trail or cycling path – there are flat, hilly and moderate routes all around and a marathon route passing through nearby hills. Otherwise, there are tennis courts 10 minutes’ drive away and horse riding schools within half an hour of the site. For family days out, Wildwood Escot (25 minutes) has all sorts of attractions from a maze and soft play to a 40-metre zipwire and a Saxon village recreation. If you’re after a real historical site, Powderham Castle (45 minutes) is 600 years old and open for guided tours or family days exploring the grounds, the play area and the secret garden.
