Set in 12 acres on the rural Devon and Cornwall borders, Wild Wanderers is a small and family-run pop-up site offering off-grid stays in a riverside field. The site’s been kept intentionally simple, so you get to enjoy a traditional camping experience – granted one with clean toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area – that lets nature take centre stage. The neatly maintained pitches are spacious and sheltered by mature trees, and you have plenty of room to relax, explore your surroundings and let the kids (and any dogs) rediscover the pleasures of being outdoors. You can all go paddling in the river, trying your luck at fishing, have a go on the rope swings and meet the friendly sheep, goats, chickens and ducks that share their home with you – you may get to hear owls at night too. Although Wild Wanderers is tucked away in the countryside, you’re actually only around 20 minutes’ drive from Bude and its beaches; you can stock up on provisions in the town’s supermarkets and eat out in a choice of pubs, cafés and beachfront bistros. If you’d rather plump for self catering, bring your barbecue or hire a raised firepit (complete with a bag of firewood) from the owners and get grilling; on selected evenings, you can also treat yourselves to woodfired pizzas freshly cooked on site.

Local attractions

Keen walkers can join the South West Coast Path at Widemouth Beach (20 minutes’ drive) for a day of hiking with glorious sea views from the clifftops. You can keep everyone active with surfing lessons at Widemouth Bay, paddleboarding or kayaking on the Bude Canal (both 25 minutes), and swimming in the sea; alternatively up the ante and go coasteering on the rugged cliffs south of Bude (half an hour). Younger kids will probably be pushing for bucket-and-spade days on the beach. Summerleaze has lifeguards in summer, Northcott Mouth (both half an hour) is dog-friendly all year, and Bude Sea Swimming Pool (35 minutes) is popular for splashing around safely in shallow water. Other family attractions include the raptor displays and dodgems at The Milky Way Adventure Park (40 minutes), and animal encounters at The Big Sheep (50 minutes). Squeeze a bit of history into your sightseeing with a visit to the clifftop ruins of Tintagel Castle (50 minutes), where you can walk down to Merlin’s Cave at low tide, or tour the ornate interior of handsome Hartland Abbey (45 minutes), with its mishmash of architectural styles and then walk down to the rugged Atlantic coastline.
