General

  • Relaxed dog friendly caravan and camping park
  • No extra charge for dogs
  • Dog exercise area, mile-long dog walk and kenneling facilities on site

It’s safe to say that Hedley Wood Caravan & Camping Park is one of the most animal-friendly sites around: it has facilities just for canine visitors, and is so dog friendly it's been lauded with an award by the Kennel Club.

Message to Fido: there’s no extra charge for dogs, so bring your mates, as the exercise area, exciting mile-long dog walk and shelves full of pooch produce in the shop will get tails wagging. Should your humans insist on boring sightseeing in places which haven’t yet grasped the concept of dog service, you can always ditch them for a day’s partying in the reasonably priced kennel facilities on site. (Just remember to keep your owners happy by letting them pick up after you and parade you around on the lead outside of the canine fun zones.) You can even pretend to let them choose the pitch: sheltered, open terrain or sea views: they do like to think they’re in charge, after all...

This is a well-equipped site: there are two modern toilet and shower blocks with free hot water, facilities for dishwashing, laundry and recharging of batteries and freezer packs, a shop for vittles and other camping essentials, and a new play area added in 2017 with climbing frame and swing. The team recommends Freesat TV on park as the TV signal in the area is very intermittent since digital transmission; Freesat kits can be hired on arrival subject to availability.

Foodwise, the Woodman bar serves up pub favourites during the peak season; kids' meals, desserts, milkshakes and hot drinks are also available, and there are carvery dinners on Sunday evenings during peak seasons, subject to numbers.

If it was not for the building noise and caravan moving, site is excel 09/18/2018

Too much work being carried out. Example - 8.20am and big heavy vehicle delivering stone passing within feet of our unit. Followed by tractor moving caravans. These can be excused by trying to say it is the end of the season, however, the number of visitors could suggest that for this site it was not quite the end of season.

    Disliked:

The toilets and showers were good but needed a little attention. notall of the showers worked and all of the taps in the gents were defective and wasted gallons of hot water when they did not turn off. most of the taps could not select hot and cold.

Sound basic site. Everything we needed at a very reasonable price. Toilets and showers clean and modern. Staff friendly. Family run business. No hard standing but grass pitches firm and sloping down slightly so roll off. Lifters needed as no completely level pitches but nothing to sloping.

Very very welcoming, nicely situated place, very clean even tho lots of dogs around, my children loved it and its only down the road from main amenities and lovely walks, went with my two children towards the end of August and on the second day, due to high winds and rain my tent ended up in a bad condition, but thanks to reception staff and the maintenance staff. They sorted everything out for me and my children, and they were very very helpful and very quick to dort things out, which pleased me and put a very nice smoke on my kids face again, I would defo recommend this place to other people, and I will be coming back next year, thanks, and thanks for everything.

    Nice and clean, good facilities

    Disliked:

only one wash/toilet block which seems to be near the hardstanding for caravans that tend to have the luxary of a toilet/shower anyway! Noisy kids playing football by tents at night (past 10pm) and kids shouting and screaming. Nothing to do with the campsite in terms of facilities but perhaps some rules if people are trying to relax or sleep.

Directions

From the north east (M5):

Take M5 south to Exeter (junction 31) and the A30 (past Okehampton) to A386 interchange (towards Bideford). Travel 2 miles and take the A3079 to Holsworthy, then onto the A3072 towards Bude. Midway between Holsworthy and Bude at Red Post cross roads, turn left onto B3254.

Alternatively:

Take M5 to junction 27 to Tiverton. Take A361 to Barnstaple (not off to South Molton!) then follow A39 (Atlantic Highway) to Kilkhampton. Turn left onto B3254 (Launceston road) to Red Post cross roads. Go straight over the crossroads on the B3254.

Travel just over two miles - take right turn on the brow of a hill (sign-posted Titson) for approximately 500 yards - we are on the right.

From the south east (A30):

Exit the A30 at Launceston. Take the A388 towards Holsworthy, then pick up B3254 towards Bude on the outskirts of Launceston. After passing through Whitstone, traverse a further 1 3/4 miles. On the brow of a hill, turn left (sign-posted Widemouth Bay) immediately before the Welcome to Devon sign for approximately 500 yards - we are on the right.

Local attractions

Guests are spoiled for choice when it comes to brilliant beaches: Bude has two of the best, Summerleaze, which has an open-air sea pool, and Crooklets, popular with surfers. Other good options nearby include Widemouth Bay, Crackington Haven (rockpooltastic) and the National Trust’s Sandymouth Bay, with its own waterfall, plus Trebarwith Strand and Westward Ho! a little further afield.

Top ideas for day trips include the castles at Tintagel and Launceston; the pretty cobbled lanes and ancient harbour of Clovelly (cars are banned in the village, but there are plenty of donkeys); the Eden Project’s exotic architecture - and contents; Padstow Harbour, famously home to Rick Stein and his multiple tastebud-ticklers; the romantic fishing villages of Boscastle and Port Isaac; or Bodmin Jail, a historic civil and naval prison which is now a museum, and is famed for its ghost hunting opportunities.

There are three adventure parks for kids in the area: Trethorne Leisure Farm, which has lots of cuddly farm animals, indoor sliding, bouncing and climbing, and outdoor action including pedalos, crazy golf and electric cars; Atlantis Adventure Park (handily located within the the Atlantic Village shopping outlet...); and the Milky Way, which has rides and rollercoasters, assault courses, live shows and falconry displays.

Must see

  • Tintagel Castle (24.6 kilometers)
  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (28.9 kilometers)
  • Rock Beach (41.8 kilometers)
