General

  • Relaxed 'dog friendly' caravan and camping park
  • No extra charge for dogs
  • Dog exercise area, mile-long dog walk and kenneling facilities on-site

It’s safe to say that Hedley Wood Caravan & Camping Park is one of the most animal-friendly sites around: as well as the facilities for canine visitors, winner of The Kennel Club's 2012 award for Somewhere to Camp no less, mini campers will do cartwheels when they find all the feathered and furry friends in the pets' corner.

Message to Fido: there’s no extra charge for dogs, so bring your mates - the exercise area, exciting mile-long dog walk and shelves full of pooch produce in the shop will get tails wagging. Should your humans insist on boring sightseeing in places which haven’t yet grasped the concept of doggie service, you can always ditch them for a day’s partying in the reasonably priced kennel facilities on site.( Just remember to keep your owners happy by letting them pick up after you and parade you around on the lead outside of the canine fun zones.) You can even pretend to let them choose the pitch - sheltered, open terrain or sea views. They do like to think they’re in charge, after all...

This is a well-equipped site: there are two modern toilet and shower blocks with free hot water, facilities for dishwashing, laundry and recharging of batteries and freezer packs, adventure playgrounds for both littlies and older kids, plus a shop for vittles and other camping essentials. The team recommends Freesat TV on park as the TV signal in the area is very intermittent since digital transmission. Freesat kits can be hired on arrival.

Foodwise, the shop provides a takeaway snack menu, or there’s homemade grub served in the conservatory of the Woodman Bar (open throughout high season and at other busy times of year).

Was fairly quiet so we got a great pitch . Love this site for being dog friendly and even being allowed to take them into the club bar and as the weather was rubbish was nice to get indoors for a meal and a few drinks .

    Disliked:

If I was knit picking the showers could of been a tad warmer otherwise nothing .

Small, and picturesque, especially if you manage to get a pitch right at the top with lovely views. Clean toilets and very dog friendly. Ability to chose your own pitch and no set time to leave.

    Disliked:

Constant noise from adjoining field, where they are clearing the site, often going on until after 10pm. Having to keep pressing the shower button every 5 secs or so to keep the water flowing and unpredictable water temperature. Wifi only available in the conservatory.

Poor, due to inadequate pitches for large motorhome. Stench farm smell 07/11/2017

    The toilets ,showers and staff.

    Disliked:

When we arrived I told Maria we 24ft long. Not a problem she said. We were shown little brier, which certainly was not big enough for our motorhome and awning. Other people had parked the wrong way in and tent was on site taking what would have been our awning space, so that was no good.
We were then shown to another pitch which again was only just long enough, minimum awning space and no room for the car .also aggressive dog above us so that was no good.
We then went onto 10 acre field. All grass, unlevel, but plenty of room. We were quite happy. Had Saturday and Sunday night all ok. Monday ,during the day the most awful stench of muck spreading filled our awning and van , we were both sick, and got headaches. It was disgusting. There was no mention of this in the booking info. We had to move as it made us both ill.
I'm hoping for 4 night refund.???. I will be making further contact.
Inw I'll not recommend d the site. Club house open on selected evenings only. Not good. The place is good for dog walk,s, that's about it .

We have got a Touring caravan stored at Hedleywood because we love it there, this is our second caravan we have stored there. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. They are going through some changes at the moment to improve the site, more things for the little children and the older children to do would be beneficial.
This is our second trip there this year and we are going again in July for a week, can't wait. The regular staff Dave,Maggie, Maria and Keith are Brilliant, keep up the good work.

The best Dog friendly site I know

Give the site a chance, you will not be disappointed

Friendly staff and pitch. Also availability of a dog kennel for the day

    Disliked:

Bar and food not open as they said it wasn't peek season and when they did open it they couldn't serve food. Some problem with gas. The shop was also only open on the odd occasion. Although we could phone them and they came to serve us. The wash up water was cold alot of the week some boiler problem. And Thursday and Friday although the cleaning Rota had been ticked the bins hadn't been emptied in the loos and they smelly bad. Also due to work going on in the park and next door it was like living on a biulding site with constant noise from heavy plant. It wasn't as relaxing as is hoped

Directions

From the north east (M5):

Take M5 south to Exeter (junction 31) and the A30 (past Okehampton) to A386 interchange (towards Bideford). Travel 2 miles and take the A3079 to Holsworthy, then onto the A3072 towards Bude. Midway between Holsworthy and Bude at Red Post cross roads, turn left onto B3254.

Alternatively:

Take M5 to junction 27 to Tiverton. Take A361 to Barnstaple (not off to South Molton!) then follow A39 (Atlantic Highway) to Kilkhampton. Turn left onto B3254 (Launceston road) to Red Post cross roads. Go straight over the crossroads on the B3254.

Travel just over two miles - take right turn on the brow of a hill (sign-posted Titson) for approximately 500 yards - we are on the right.

From the south east (A30):

Exit the A30 at Launceston. Take the A388 towards Holsworthy, then pick up B3254 towards Bude on the outskirts of Launceston. After passing through Whitstone, traverse a further 1 3/4 miles. On the brow of a hill, turn left (sign-posted Widemouth Bay) immediately before the Welcome to Devon sign for approximately 500 yards - we are on the right.

Local attractions

Guests are spoiled for choice when it comes to brilliant beaches: Bude has two of the best, Summerleaze, which has an open-air sea pool, and Crooklets, popular with surfers. Other good options nearby include Widemouth Bay, Crackington Haven (rockpooltastic) and the National Trust’s Sandymouth Bay, with its own waterfall, plus Trebarwith Strand and Westward Ho! a little further afield.

Top ideas for day trips include the castles at Tintagel and Launceston; the pretty cobbled lanes and ancient harbour of Clovelly (cars are banned in the village, but there are plenty of donkeys); the Eden Project’s exotic architecture - and contents; Padstow Harbour, famously home to Rick Stein and his multiple tastebud-ticklers; the romantic fishing villages of Boscastle and Port Isaac; or Bodmin Jail, a historic civil and naval prison which is now a museum, and is famed for its ghost hunting opportunities.

There are three adventure parks for kids in the area: Trethorne Leisure Farm, which has lots of cuddly farm animals, indoor sliding, bouncing and climbing, and outdoor action including pedalos, crazy golf and electric cars; Atlantis Adventure Park (handily located within the the Atlantic Village shopping outlet...); and the Milky Way, which has rides and rollercoasters, assault courses, live shows and falconry displays.

Must see

  • Tintagel Castle (24.6 kilometres)
