  • Dog-friendly Devon wildlife haven with peaceful woodlands
  • A 15-minute drive from Dartmoor National Park; 20 minutes from Exeter
  • Small campfires permitted and firewood available at a small cost
If you’ve been pining for a wildlife retreat, set your sights on a stay at Little Harford, surrounded by seven acres of woodland in a peaceful valley in Devon. With mature trees all around and a small river at the bottom, this is the kind of site where you'll want to pack your binoculars to spy on the site’s passing buzzards, owls, squirrels, pheasants, foxes, deer and wild birds. This is almost-wild camping with no electricity, wifi or phone signal, and facilities are kept minimal for a splendid back-to-nature stay. There are compost toilets, an off-grid shower, and a washing-up area on site – and across the road, there’s a tap in the property’s yard to tend to water bottles in need of a top-up. You'll need a good-quality torch for evening manoeuvres though. When you arrive, dump your kit in a wheelbarrow to descend the hillside. Later, prep your goodies for a small campfire, as they're permitted on site (firewood is available at a small cost). The area is kept as wild as possible, meaning just the paths and pitches are mowed, and pitches are kept to a small number to keep things pretty and peaceful. As there’s no rubbish collection, guests take it with them at the end of their stay to protect the wildlife. Don’t feel like you’re completely cut off here though, as the site is under 10 minutes’ drive from the A30 (reach the centre of Exeter 20 minutes’ drive away and the edge of Dartmoor National Park in 15 minutes). A five-minute drive away, there's also Tedburn St Mary, a village with a small food shop and a pub for tasty eats.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Quiet wild camping type spot in beautiful woodland.
Friendly owner and fresh eggs for sale.
There are various spots in the woodland reached by bark-covered paths, down which you take your equipment in wheelbarrows. Campfires are welcome when renting and purchasing firepit and logs. The toilet is an earth-type with a shower in the next cubicle running from a small caravan style boiler.
a short drive to the local village where there are pubs selling meals at reasonable prices

Disliked having to leave :(

Friendly staff and for completely off grid it’s an amazing site.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Loved this place. This is camping in absolute peace and with complete respect for the environment. All the camping spots were perfectly prepared for pitching a tent, without any impact on the beautiful wood. Other guests are hardly noticeable from each camping spot, and I found an atmosphere of respect for each other and the environment. The way this place was set up and cared for is perfect. Rachel is the perfect guardian for this beautiful spot on earth and the perfect host as well. I would recommend this place to anyone wanting to camp in peace and quiet.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Just what I was looking for. Quiet and off grid. No phone signal. Ideal for reconnecting with nature. Each pitch is secluded making it very private. Like wild camping in the woods.

Disliked Not a dislike, but the pitches have wood chip so if you have a porch, bring a tarp to help keep the chips out of the tent when getting in and out.

Quiet beautiful location, a great tranquil escape

Primitive cement/asphalt campervan campsite

Liked Small quiet campsite ideal for relaxing. Stayed at the upper campervan spot and what a lovely place to switch off. Very fortunate to be more or less the only visitors during our one night stay, but pitches are well placed so even with more on site you would still have space. Facilities are basic but more than enough. Such a warm welcome on arrival. Nice to see ongoing site improvements being done. A beautiful location, could not have asked for a nicer stay.

Disliked Nothing.

Local attractions

If you’ve already conquered the local woodland walks and bridleways, Dartmoor National Park has plenty more trails to tackle. The National Trust’s Fingle Bridge (20 minutes’ drive) has peaceful woodland walks along the river Teign. For a steeper climb, Belstone Tor (25 minutes) passes a Stone Age circle to a scenic viewpoint. A little deeper into the national park, Chagford (25 minutes) is a stannary town with traditional thatched roofs, and Fernworthy Reservoir (35 minutes) has nature trails, picnic areas and fly fishing. While there are plenty of adventures inland, the coast also has its own playground, whether you prefer a traditional seaside or resort or the smaller coves of Sidmouth (45 minutes). If you want the former, perhaps head to the lido, beach and pier at Teignmouth beach (35 minutes) or the watersports centre at Exmouth beach (40 minutes), which also has a long sandy stretch and rockpools to rummage through.
