General

  • Valley site among mature trees and landscaped ponds
  • A mile from Haldon Forest Park
  • Two playgrounds and modern toilet and shower blocks

Pitching up in the River Kenn valley, on a park surrounded by Devon woodland and countryside, with mature trees and landscaped ponds complete with resident ducks… does this sound like it might fit the bill? If so, take your flock to Haldon Forest Holiday Park, five miles from Exeter and just a mile from the woodland and bike trails of the 3500-acre Haldon Forest Park.

Haldon Forest has two playgrounds on the park for kids to go out on a limb under the watchful eye of more mature types; like most of the facilities here, the playgrounds were recently developed and have been installed since 2010.

The site also has up to date laundry facilities, and three modern toilet and shower blocks with heating and free hot water. All in all, you’ll surely find this park all that it’s quacked up to be…

Please note

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The café/bar will only be open on a limited number of days during the year to satisfy demand. Opening times will be at the site manager's discretion.

This site is peaceful and family orientated; groups of three or more young adults under the age of 25 are not permitted.

Quiet location with lots of space as stayed at end of season.
Nice well maintained pitches , with excellent nearby electricity connection. Big gaps between pitches on opposite side.

    Disliked:

Permanent caravans in middle field which you had to drive through. Felt a bit run down. Bin area. Old fires dotted around. Noise at night from kids playing on the playground area. Lots of screaming.

    - Spacious pitch, not cramped in with other people
    - Toilets, showers and dish washing stations were clean and well maintained. I regularly saw team members cleaning
    - Beautiful site, beautifully maintained
    - Owners/reception were very friendly and helpful
    - We were pitched next to a little pond which meant we often had little duck visitors, which we LOVED
    - Very close to a variety of activities, from city shopping to waterfall walks. Plenty to do for all ages (assuming you have a car)

    Disliked:

    - Had to rack my brains for something because I am all for constructive criticism the only thing we disliked was the lack of recycling bins

Kids playing area was big. Enough showers in different location around the campsite, at least for men, ladies had to wait at busy times( August Bank Holiday).
Hard drives through the nearer parts of the campsite, as the further, soft ones; you can get stuck on them if wet.
Good location. Helpful owner. Big pitches.

    Disliked:

Football pitch could do with fencing , as it has been moved to the end of the campsite from playground and there is none around it. If pitch near it you get regular nocks on your tent.
Only one playing area for kids( advertise two), and if you add this to the fact that the campsite is huge, (much bigger than numbers on Pitch up suggest), then you have lots of kids in one part of the campsite.
Some noisy, big groups keeps you awake till late(4am).
Seasonal tourers area looks run down in some parts.

Well kept grounds, excellent place for touring. Like this quiet site but not bank holiday.

    Disliked:

Went in July it was great as not many tents, and toilets and showers spotless and apparently we had the last pitch, So booked for bank holiday, when we arrived the adult field was packed with tents at least 4 times as many, never saw the toilets clean, no antibacterial spray in loo as there was july, plus loads children on adults only field. In the other field people partying and children screaming went on till after midnight. Felt like the owners had crammed as many tents in as they could.

Loved the location and peacefulness of the site. We were in adults only which suited us but we also walked through the family areas which were much more lively and looked ideal for family holidays.

    Disliked:

Disappointed that there was no shop for milk or bread and no recycling- felt wrong to be putting glass and other recycling in general waste. The site must have been amazing at one time but some areas are looking Tired and a good deep clean is needed especially the toilet and shower blocks - simply replacing rusty bins, loo brushes and cleaning windows would help.

Local attractions

Bring the bikes to Devon or hire wheels at Haldon Forest Park to take full advantage of the miles of woodland mountain bike and cycle trails for various levels of ability.

Discovery trails, play equipment and several walking trails are also in the forest park including the circular Butterfly Trail and the easy-rated Mamhead Sensory Trail with gorgeous views along the Jurassic Coast and over the Exe estuary. A ten mile horse riding trail is also around for more relaxed forest sightseeing, with horse riding of a different type at the forest’s Exeter Racecourse.

Dartmoor National Park, with more hacking, hiking and biking as well as tor climbing, guided walks and geocaching, is a short drive from the holiday park. It has regular events throughout the year, towns and villages to take in, the famous Dartmoor ponies to spot and Dartmoor Zoo with meerkats, monkeys, lions and more.

Bring binoculars along with the bikes: the forest park and surrounding area are wildlife havens, with rare birds of prey and wild deer in the forest itself and birdwatching a few miles away at the Site of Special Scientific Interest the Exe Estuary: watch oystercatchers showing excellent culinary taste in breaking open mussels at Bull Hill or take a trip to the nature reserve at Dawlish Warren at the estuary’s mouth. If you’re bringing along the bikes, the National Cycle Network Exe Estuary Trail runs to Exmouth from Dawlish.

The sublime sand of Dawlish Warren is one of several South Devon sandy stretches, with the beaches at Teignmouth, Exmouth and Torbay within easy distance of Haldon Forest and the coastal towns of Torquay and Paignton a little further along the coast. Exmouth is the place to don the wetsuit as it’s known for watery sports of all types including diving, windsurfing and sailing; it’s also a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.

Finally, a stay at Haldon Forest has to include a day or two in Exeter to see its twelfth century cathedral, medieval Guildhall and famous historic quayside with antique shops, restaurants, canoe and boat trips and events such as dragon boat racing and guided tours.
