  • Small, secluded and peaceful site with glorious countryside views
  • Less than a 10-minute drive to Exeter city centre and 20 to Dartmoor
  • Within 35 minutes of south coast beaches; pub 15 minutes’ walk away
Hankering after a trip combining Devon’s city, coast and countryside? As well as having views out across grassy green fields from its grounds, Bryndir Campsite is under a 10-minute drive from the centre of Exeter and 35 from Exmouth’s sandy shores so you can tick all three off your list. The park – which makes sure to keep visitor numbers low for a peaceful vibe – really does feel rural: it has a local badger sett, is often frequented by deer… and if you come at the right time of year you’ll see dragonflies flitting about or can pick your own blackberries to snack on. For other meals, the restaurants and supermarkets of Exeter (which also has excellent shops and a cracking cathedral) are within easy reach, and you can seek out a country pub serving food a 15-minute walk away beside the banks of the Nadder brook. Back at Bryndir, the owners have ensured there are toilet facilities as well as hot water for washing, so you don’t have to go completely native while getting away from the humdrum of urban life…

Route directions

Out of Exeter take the road towards Whitestone up Redhills. Cross the mini roundabout and look for a signed triangle in the road. Take the right fork signed Rowhorne and Oldrige – Rowhorne Road. There’s a pretty cottage on the corner (if you go down a hill to the Royal Oak pub you have gone too far). Proceed on Rowhorne Road for approx 300 yards. Bryndir is a cream house on the left by the national speed limit signs. Go through the open gate into the field. There is no signage, so look for the fallen oak tree in the entrance.

Local attractions

Exeter has historical attractions like the handsome Guildhall and underground passageways – which are well worth taking a tour inside – and also has three theatres and a couple of cinemas for rainy days. If the sun’s shining, turn up at the quay area for ambles around the shops or hire bikes and canoes to explore the canal; this area's pubs and bars are also prime for late-night sups in the warmer weather. Wanting a glimpse of typical Devonshire village life? Small and splendid settlements on Dartmoor like Widecombe in the Moor – just past Haytor Rocks (40 minutes) for hikes with stunning views across this national park – are a 45-minute drive away. Rural wanders are excellent in Dartmoor too, the northern edges of which are 20 minutes away from the park, while beaches like Budleigh Salterton and Dawlish Warren are within a 40-minute drive. Enroute to the coast, stop at traditional Devon harbour towns and villages like Topsham on the River Exe estuary or get in a round at the Exeter Golf and Country Club (both around 20 minutes). On the other side of the water is Powderham Castle (25 minutes) for a look at a grand old home, while north east of the park is the mighty manor of Killerton House. If the kids are with you switch trips to estates for the 60 rides, attractions, live shows and zoo at Crealy Theme Park & Resort or crack on to Haldon Forest Park (20 minutes) for the cycle routes, Segway hire and adventure rope course.
