You may never have to choose between comfort and wilderness again, for they go hand-in-hand at Feather Down Farm – Billingsmoor Farm. This dog-friendly glampsite is on a 400-acre organic dairy farm at Silverton in Devon, and has all sorts of thoughtful amenities to make family holidays go with a swing.
Accommodation is in stylishly laid-out, comfortable – and immensely spacious – canvas safari tents. There is no electricity (or wifi, pre-warn the teens please), so candles and oil lamps provide light along with a romantic ambience. Woodburning stoves keep everyone cosy and come in handy for cooking too.
All is provided for you, from cosy sofas to dining tables and well-equipped kitchens with bags of utensils. Proper beds and bunks (sleeping up to 10) come with ultra-comfy mattresses and feather duvets, and don’t forget private flushing toilets and a private outdoor shower with hot running water. And if you really want to soak any stresses away, maybe you'd like to add hot tub hire to your booking too?
Outside, a covered wooden decking keeps you dry if the weather doesn’t play nice, and there’s a grill for alfresco dining when it does. A pizza oven gets fired up weekly, and an honesty shop (which also sells lots of Devon produce) has all the basics in case you run short of foodie bits and bobs.
Site owners Jayne and Robert are on hand to lead you on farm walks and visits to their milking parlour, should you wish to learn more about farming.
Parking is not allowed by the pitches, but there are wheelbarrows to help you get your gear from car to canvas hideaway.

Billingsmoor Farm is well-placed between Devon’s north and south coastlines for jaunts to the beach – the shingle expanse at Porlock (an hour’s drive) in the north is backed by a marshy haven for seabirds, while Exmouth beach (50 minutes) on the south coast is a smart choice for rockpooling with the kids and trying out kite surfing or paddleboarding.
The farm is also close to three areas of dramatic beauty: the Blackdown Hills (35 minutes) are a haven for cycling, horse riding or walking. Spot wild ponies running free from the numerous off-road hiking trails or cross the Bronze Age clapper bridge at Tarr Steps (55 minutes) in Exmoor National Park (40 minutes), or visit Dartmoor National Park (50 minutes) to take a tour of sumptuous apartments at art deco Castle Drogo (an hour).
If you’d rather stay closer to your home base, treat the kids to tractors and earth-moving machinery at Diggerland Devon (25 minutes), or have a wander around the lovely moated gardens at Bickleigh Castle (10 minutes). Alternatively, why not try a slow-paced, horse-drawn barge trip along the Grand Western Canal from Tiverton (20 minutes)?
