  • Shepherd’s hut with fishing lakes, half an hour’s drive from Dartmoor
  • A 15-minute drive to Roadford Lake and 35 minutes to Bude for beaches
  • Stabling and equestrian facilities available; pub five minutes’ drive
Whether you’re planning on darting down to Dartmoor National Park for hikes and the like or exploring sandy beaches and surf hotspots on the Devon coast, you’re going to need somewhere cosy to stay that’s within reach of it all. That’s exactly what you get with the shepherd’s hut at Northcombe Farm, just half an hour’s drive from Dartmoor National Park, 35 minutes from Bude and 40 minutes from Widemouth beach. That’s not all – the shepherd’s hut also has stabling facilities available for one horse on the junction of three bridleways, so there are plenty of options for outings. With two private fishing lakes, you’ll be free to spend the morning fishing for roach and tench if you wish. The river Wolf also runs through the site’s boundaries. It’s likely you’re already aware of the excellent beaches along the south Devon coast, but fab views can also be caught from the ferry or boat trips that operate around the coast. Soak up all that spectacular scenery from the South West Coast Path too, along with splendid seaside towns along the clifftop route. South Devon has three areas designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as a World Heritage Site, a selection of national nature reserves, Sites of Special Scientific Interest, forests, woodlands and parks. They’re all mighty good places to appreciate nature at its finest. Beaworthy (10 minutes’ drive) first, perhaps, for granite tors, standing stones and ancient woodlands? Or Dartmoor’s ponies, stannary towns and peaceful villages? With a farm shop 20 minutes’ drive away and two local pubs between five and 10 minutes’ drive away, tasty food is also easy to track down.

Local attractions

At Roadford Lake (15 minutes’ drive), there are a fair few ways of getting out on the water. The activity centre lends out kayaks, paddleboards and rowing equipment, but the especially adventurous sorts can dabble in windsurfing. If that’s not quite enough activities on the water, Widemouth beach (40 minutes) is a hot favourite for bodyboarders and surfers (and rockpool rummagers for that matter when low tide reveals hundreds of the little things). The surfing beaches at Bude (35 minutes) might beckon you down with their regular surf too. Dartmoor National Park (half an hour) is a playground of sorts for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling and climbing. When you’re sketching out hiking plans, don’t leave out Lydford Gorge (25 minutes), a National Trust site with a deep gorge and a 30-metre waterfall. Perhaps a simpler day sampling sweet treats and browsing markets at the traditional market town of Okehampton (15 minutes) is up your street too. It has a medieval motte and bailey castle for good measure.

1 bedroom shepherd's hut

Liked: Loved the location. There's a lake and bridle path opposite the shepherds hut which takes you into a magical land full of wildlife and woods. Loved the decor and functionality of the shepherds hut, comfy bed, cooking facilities, shower, outdoor seating.
Loved everything about the stay.
Tony messaged us before the stay welcoming us, which I thought was a lovely touch.
Fantastic break away from it all and lovely hosts.
