Swoop on this one, surfers… Mount Hawke Holiday Bungalows is a small and family-owned site in peaceful Cornwall countryside, about 15 minutes' drive from popular beaches like Portreath and Chapel Port. On the outskirts of Mount Hawke, near St Agnes, it's at the head of an historic mining valley of heathland and woodland, in a wildlife haven for hours' worth of peaceful spotting. Accommodation is self catering and shared facilities include a games room with table football and ping pong as well as a play area with swings and a slide. Guests are welcome to walk or picnic in Mount Hawke Holiday Bungalows' private fields or woodland whenever they like. A public footpath running past the site's field leads to cliff and country walks; from this, you can join the north Cornwall section of the 630-mile South West Coast Path. The site is 500 metres down a private lane from the grocery shops, post office and restaurant and bar of Mount Hawke village, less than 20 minutes' walk away, while in Porthtowan (about half an hour's walk away) there's a pub and a popular beach bar, both of which serve hot fresh food.

Local attractions

Take woodland walks from the site to join up with the the South West Coast Path at Chapel Porth Beach or award-winning Porthtowan beach, both around 15 minutes' drive away. From Porthtowan, take the three-and-a half-mile circular route around the town, taking in the blood-red cliffs (said to be stained with a giant's blood), the multi-coloured caves and arch on the beach at Chapel Porth and the abandoned mines at Chapel Combe. For further walks, the popular resort of St Agnes and the adjacent golden sandy beach at Trevaunance Cove are a good hour's hike away (or about 10 minutes in the car), and it's about 20 minutes to Perranporth's golf course and three-mile beach. The wilder north Cornwall section of the South West Coast Path, which stretches across Porthtowan, Chapel Porth, St Agnes Beacon and Trevaunance Cove, has some of the most spectacular cliff scenery in the country and is home to various species of birdlife, such as peregrine falcons, marsh harriers and short-eared owls. Head to the RSPB reserve at Hayle Estuary to see a wealth of wading birds, like oystercatchers, redshanks and herring gulls joined by the occasional rare interloper from North America. It's around a 50-minute trip to the indoor rain forest biospheres of the Eden Project and the restored Lost Gardens of Heligan. A bit further afield, it's about an hour to Land's End, and if you want to go even further west, day trips to the Scilly Isles are very doable from Penzance, 45 minutes from the site.
