Garris Farm Caravan and Camping: Looking across the fields to Penzance

General

  • Rural campsite in a rural setting overlooking Mount's Bay
  • Penzance 10 minutes' drive; St Ives a quarter of an hour
  • Dog-friendly campsite overlooking open countryside in Cornwall

Restful rural surroundings with an ancient village, castle and sea close by… that’s the lovely little mix at Garris Farm, a quiet and peaceful site on a hillside above the small village of Gulval in the far west of Cornwall. With views over Mount's Bay and spectacular vistas towards Penzance, this elevated site is an excellent spot for holidaying in one of the prettiest parts of the South West.

Appreciate the relaxing surroundings and watch the night sky light up with stars, or take yourself out on active jaunts over the miles of local footpaths past church towers and old mine stacks that point to Cornwall's industrial heritage. The site has direct access to paths that lead from the farm to Gulval, Castle an Dinus and Chysauster Ancient Village, a late Iron Age and Romano-British settlement.

The South West Coast Path is close too if you fancy some really splendid scenery, with seaside towns like Penzance and St Ives accessible in under a quarter of an hour's drive.

The set-up at this simple farm site includes a running water tap, recycling bins and a toilet and shower block in the yard. Dogs are welcome here, as long as they are well-behaved and kept on leads at all times.

The view from the camping field was very pleasant. The owners were lovely and very welcoming. I don’t think they could do enough for you.

    Disliked:

Walk to the toilets and showers. Had to walk down an unlit country lane to an unsecured toilet block in an old cow shed. Facilities were clean but windows banged in the wind and there were a load of old rusty fridges etc stored in there. There were also other noises when I was having a shower to find there were 3-4 mice scattering around just outside the shower cubicle which left through a hole in the door and scarpered under said fridges. Facilities could be so much better and a lovely feature could be made out of the old cow shed but would have to stop mice entering the toilet & shower area for us to return.

Great Pitch, great communication. The loo and shower block is a short walk from where you pitch the tent.
The shower and loos are very clean and the showers are amazing! The shower cubicles are a great size and having hanging hooks for your stuff so it doesn't get soaked!
Great location for getting into St.Ives.

Very friendly people who run this farm who are most helpful and at hand should you need anything.

Very clean toilets and hot showers in the block and recycling area which is cleaned regularly throughout the day.

Plenty of room for your car and tent, and welcome you to have BBQs if you like.

There is a amazing view when you get out your pitch in the morning of Penzance sea front. And at night there's a lovely view of Penzance Town.

A pub which is 2 minutes drive away, and only 5 minutes drive to 3 superstores.

I wouldn't hesitate to use the farm again.

Many thanks for having me and my mate for a few days camping.

    Disliked:

You can actually walk to the local pub however you wouldn't want to as its extremely dark at sundown. And traffic can come around the sharp and narrow bends very fast.

However this is just as a precaution to be aware of is why I'm putting this. As the farm itself was wonderful, and this is to do with the local area.

Local attractions

Dig up a little of Cornwall’s past… it’s easy to do so from this campsite. The Chysauster Ancient Village (roughly half an hour's walk) was full of farmers 2000 years ago, but now, you’ll get to look around the remaining village street, courtyard and thatched rooms.

Then, make way to Marazion for St Michael's Mount (15 minutes' drive), where the tidal causeway leads the way to an old fortress… picnics on the front lawn, shopping or just learning the tales of the past make for a history-full afternoon out.

Geevor Tin Mine (25 minutes) opens up the past Cornish copper mining history, but when you’re done with learning about history, there’s the Tate St Ives (15 minutes) for those art fans among you or the Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens (10 minutes) for finely-fashioned exotic and sub-tropical gardens, an art gallery and sculpture garden.

Off to other horizons… Penzance (10 minutes) is the place to go for ferries to the Isles of Scilly, while Mousehole (20 minutes) is a traditional fishing village and Land's End (30 minutes) has shopping and splendid scenery on the most southerly point in England.
