Planning a cosy Cornish break? Then drop your anchor at Phoenix Farm, a self-contained shepherd's hut on the edge of the Bodmin Moor. The hut is in a paddock on a working beef and sheep farm adjacent to the farmhouse 60 metres away with views of the countryside. And the cherry on top? It's only 45 minutes’ drive away from the North Cornwall coast. Walking fans should find their groove here, as the site is a short walk away from historical features such as the Hurlers Stone Circles (20 minutes' walk). You’ll be able to spot The Cheesewring (25 minutes) and disused tin mines (five minutes) from your private garden, a small patch of land ready for stargazing under the dark skies landscape or listening to birds over breakfast. This is a National Landscape and a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the scenery shows in the local village of Minions, where there’s a small shop, pub and tearoom. You’ll want to grab some essentials, as the hut is kitted out with a kitchenette (kettle, toaster, microwave, fridge, single hob and tea, coffee, hot chocolate and sugar provided). You'll have an ensuite with a shower, toilet, basin and fluffy towels, and this cosy feel continues into the hut's hobbit wood burner and comfy carver chairs by the fire – perhaps for a game of cards or a snuggle with a good book? After you make use of the private parking a short walk from the hut, expect a Cornish cream tea upon arrival for a true warm welcome.

Put your foot to the pedal on the Camel Trail (half an hour’s drive)… this splendid cycling route goes between Bodmin and pretty Padstow, stopping at Wadebridge on the way, so it’s your very own 18-mile tour of some top towns. For watery action instead, Summerleaze Beach (55 minutes) is sure to hit the spot – just decide between surfing, watersports and paddles in the sea pool. There’s plenty more fresh sea air around here, whether it’s on a fishing trip from Looe (half an hour), a beach day in Boscastle (45 minutes) or surfing and rockpooling at Crackington Beach (45 minutes). As for the historical, perhaps a pedal on a hire bicycle at the National Trust’s Lanhydrock (half an hour), a Victorian country house, or a visit to Antony (35 minutes), a National Trust-manged 18th-century house? Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park (50 minutes) has forest trails, segways, circus classes and a shopping village, while the Eden Project (35 minutes) has splendid rainforest biomes. Shepherd's hut

Liked Just come back from my stay over Christmas. Couldn't have chosen a better place for a quiet getaway. Greeted by some friendly sheep when I arrived. The hut was beautiful and cosy, got the fire going straight away. Some lovely little touches inside the hut to make it festive. Definitely a place I would love to come back to.

Shepherd's hut

Liked Very private and cosy, right on the farm with some stunning views through the trees. Amelia was very helpful through a little hiccup. Very reasonably priced and close to The Green for a wedding. Little log burner and a simple kitchen is all you need.

Disliked Wish I could have spent another day there!

Liked Very peaceful as long as the sounds of farm animals work for you, not a problem for me.

Disliked Stay 2 days, 2nd day I could not get the hot water to to work, which was a shame.

Liked We only stayed one night as a stop over on the way home, but the place was lovely & tidy. Fantastic view, Beautiful Countryside.
