General

  • Wild camping on Bodmin Moor, a half-hour drive from surfing beaches
  • A 20-minute drive to Bodmin; 25 minutes to the South West Coast Path
  • No-frills site with pick-your-own peaceful riverside pitches

Part of a family-run working farm in north Cornwall, Tresmeake is a pop-up site with riverside pitches in peaceful meadows. This is back-to-basics wild camping (there are portaloos on site, though) with rugged moorland views, yet you can be catching waves at Widemouth Bay in 30 minutes.

As well as world-famous surfing beaches, there’s plenty to keep sporty families occupied here. Explore the moors on horseback, play a round of golf, or learn to sail a dinghy on the Camel Estuary. Cycling options cover everything from easy potters on country lanes to challenging mountain-biking trails, and if you have the odd rainy day, there’s an indoor pool in Tavistock.

From the farm, you have direct access to the hilly Bodmin Moor, where cattle, sheep and ponies roam freely among rocky tors and ancient stone circles. It’s a demanding four-mile walk to Brown Willy, the highest point in Cornwall, and long-distance hikers can be on the South West Coast Path at Boscastle in 25 minutes by car.

Back at base, the sharp-eyed among you might spot kingfishers, herons or Canada geese along the banks of Penpont Water, or see elusive wild deer and foxes in the fields. You may even hear the call of the barn owl during the evening. And thanks to the lack of light pollution hereabouts, this is a great spot for stargazing on clear nights.

Barbecues are allowed (bring your own) as long as they're off the ground. Sorting supplies is easy too, with a handy store in Altarnun (there are bigger supermarkets in Launceston). Don’t want to cook? Not a problem – there are Cornish ales and fresh seafood in the local pub, just a 10-minute stroll away.

We had the place to ourselves. Totally wild, long grass …08/15/2021

We had the place to ourselves. Totally wild, long grass for the dogs to play in, buzzards and swallows flying overhead, rabbits running around even a ford across the river to the other side of the site. We were in a roof tent and pitched up to the right of the river crossing, cooled our beers in the river and went to the local pub 5 minutes stroll from the gate. The pub was perfect with a really good menu at a sensible price.
The only facilities are a portaloo and a bin (with bin bags for you to take and use)
We used our own facilities though. This is our kind of place👍👍🤩

Stunning Location. Relaxed approach. Plenty of space between pitches

Would need more toilets and bin facilities if any more people were staying. Would be great to have recycling options too.

From the manager...

Thank you for your positive feedback.
I will have more toilets and extra dustbins, and there will be recycling facilities in future. This was our first weekend being open and I took quite a few late bookings which I did not expect.

View of rolling hills. Very few kids. Distance from other campers. Free too use your own bbq. Great walks in area.

    Disliked:

Highly priced. Was advertised as pitchup any where along the river but river was behind fence and bushes so quite difficult. We booked this to pitchup by a river for the evening and there was no open access to do so. Half the field was boggy.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review.
There is a fence within feet of the river and you could have camped in this area as it was dry as others did.
Unfortunately due the extreme storms and rain of the previous few weeks a small part of the field was wet but certainly not half, and it was not along the riverbank. As this was during the first dry days after the rain it had not had chance to dry up.

It was a lovely big field so we had space and privacy. The owner was so nice, when we couldnt find the location, I called her and then she stayed on the phone until we found the place with great directions. Later on she came around to all of the tents checking if we were okay and had a lovely friendly chat with us.
