General

  • Quiet, family-friendly site on a working dairy farm
  • Half an hour's drive from Arundel Castle or Worthing beach
  • Half a mile from Downs Link National Trail; fishing by arrangement

Merrion Farm is a working dairy farm set on the banks of the Adur river. The site is located in the middle of green Sussex Weald countryside, close to top walking routes like the Downs Link National Trail (half a mile away) and the South Downs Way (five miles away). Angling fans are also welcome here – relaxing river fishing is available by arrangement.

This family-run spot has been in the hands of the same clan for nearly 90 years. Stays here will give you a real feel for the rural rhythms of a working farm – more than 100 gorgeous dairy cows call this place home and politely trot off for milking twice daily.

Keep your eyes peeled at dusk for a chance to see other critters, including badgers, barn owls and bats. You can also bring along furry animals of your own, as dogs are welcome at Merrion Farm.

This is a back to basics kind of place that's all about spending time in the open air, with pitches and accommodation spread across two exclusive-use woodland areas where you can feel free to set up campfires and barbecues (firewood can be bought on site for a small price). Clean and functional compost loos are available for guests.

Getting hungry? A fab country pub with a waterside terrace is just under a mile away. The nearest supermarket is a five-minute drive away in Partridge Green.

We had a wonderful time in the wild camping pitch, very reasonably priced for total privacy and a good fire pit. We enjoyed hearing the Tawny Owls at night, picking sloe berries and befriending cows in the neighboring field.
    Pros:
*Lots of space for a tarp shelter if camping off season
*Very clean compost toilet with running water
*Close proximity to excellent pub and loads of footpaths to explore while getting there.
*Full 4G signal, remote but not too remote

    Disliked:

Nothing, but if you are afraid of cows this probably isn't for you!

Very private and surrounded by fields that are great for stargazing if the sky is clear. Great walking from the campsite and a nice pub a short distance away. We loved having campfires in the evenings -one wheelbarrow of wood lasted us two nights. Having a large picnic table and some chairs available was very convenient & reduced the amount of stuff we had to carry. All in all we had a wonderful stay and really enjoyed the area.

    Disliked:

Although there is a lot of choice as to where to set up the ground is hard and a bit bumpy (not a problem with a decent sleeping mat). In the silence of the night vehicles on the main road seem very loud. It does pretty much stop later at night though and no problem with earplugs if you are a light sleeper like me.

Janice is lovely too, greeted us and helped us with our things.

My brother and I came to Merrion Farm to stay for two nights in a tent pitch and loved everything about it! Jan was a very welcoming and efficient host and made sure we had everything we needed. The pitch is a fair walk (5 mins or so) from the main entrance to the farm, so bear this in mind when packing, but wheelbarrows are available to transport everything and it's very easy to do so. The distance means the pitches are very private and it feels like you're out in the wilderness! They are set in woody clearings with their own campfire area with benches to gather round...a real rugged camping experience. There's space in the 'clearing' we used for probably 15 tents - it was a huge space, all for us. You can buy wood for burning for a very good price and there's a grill rack to go over the fire for cooking if you need it. There's a compost toilet in a very comfortable and clean little shed, complete with a sink with running water. Fresh drinking water is easily available too. For us, the site was a perfect halfway between a campsite and wild camping - there's a loo, but you feel like you're out in the wilderness! It was lovely to hear the cows from the farm in the distance, and the dawn chorus was absolutely wonderful to wake up to. The site is only minutes from several of the mapped South Downs walking trails, and there's a river very close by to explore. There was literally nothing we didn't like about this site, in fact it exceeded our expectations. We will definitely be back again, whether together or with other friends. My only advice would be to make sure you bring wellies or walking boots for the walk from the entrance to the site - it was dry for us but would probably get a bit muddy after rain!

Our boys didn't like the long grass -not good for football or cricket!
If weather is bad transporting luggage through maze field in wheelbarrows wouldn't be such fun but for us it was a bonus!

We found the site easily and were met by Janice, who is so lovely and accommodating. It was lovely to be on a working farm and see it in action. We loved the walk through the corn field to the clearing where the bell tent had been pre-pitched, and the fire area which was already set out with chairs to welcome us.
It is a very beautiful spot amongst the trees, and a short walk to the river.
No showers was fine for a couple of nights, and the toilet/sink was super clean.
We will definitely look forward to coming again and are wild camping converts..
