  • Quiet West Sussex site near the village of East Dean
  • Goodwood Estate events 15 minutes’ drive; Chichester 25 minutes
  • In the South Downs National Park, with access to South Downs Way
Setting off for strolls in the South Downs National Park is splendidly easy from Newhouse Farm Wild Camping. This quiet and off-grid wild camping site is part of the Goodwood Estate, and it has footpaths running directly from the farm to the South Downs Way and other parts of the network of trails that run through this scenic part of the world. The farm makes a lovely place for a peaceful rural break in the West Sussex countryside, with pitches spread around the perimeter of a large field that’s got plenty of space in the middle for chilling out or playing games. There are gorgeous views of national park landscapes all around, and clusters of trees on site give a home to local wildlife. It’s a wild camping setup here, but you’ll have access to toilets (although please note no showers or hot water). Dogs and kids are welcome, and campfires and barbecues are permitted to help you cook and keep warm by night. And you may well need that warmth, as you’re likely to want to stay out as long as possible enjoying the starry displays in this International Dark Sky Reserve. The main Goodwood festival site is 15 minutes’ drive away, so this is a handy place to stay if you’re heading to an event there. Closer to home is the village of East Dean, just under two miles away, which has a good foodie pub.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Beautiful site with lovely views very quite, and large pitches.

Disliked Facilities are very basic, I know it’s wild camping but they are charging the same price as many sites offering much better facilities and not even providing a waste pint to empty own portals. Perhaps a few more water taps around the site and improved toilet block/shower?
Dogs dogs and more dogs watch out for dogs Pooh!

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Stunning location with a really relaxed feel to the site. We had plenty of space for tents, BBQs and the kids and dogs to run around in. It was perfect for us as a larger group with a mix of people and needs, including some first time campers and young childern. There were so many footpaths from the site up onto the downs to explore and some very friendly cows as neighbours. It felt like we were in a completely new place despite only being a few miles from home.

The site had a nice mix of different groups without feeling crowded or too busy. The portaloos were all clean and enough that you never had to wait. I think not having showers meant you got a very different type of camper to some of the more commercial sites, which was perfect for us. The site owners were friendly and present. A really lovely site and definitely one we will be returning to!

Disliked It is a very long road in but I think that adds to the magic of the site.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Great location especially for walking with many footpaths not far from the campsite. Well organised site and a bonus that you can choose where to pitch your tent. Lovely views from the camping field.

Disliked The site is advertised as peaceful (which is definitely can be) with quiet hours from 10pm. Unfortunately there was a large group staying who were rather noisy well past this time. It’s great that they were enjoying their time away but it did impact others. This is not a reflection on the owner of the site as she was very helpful and accommodating.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked It was a very peaceful campsite and the idyllic location is just perfect for walks on the South Downs Way.
Rachel is very friendly and always available to help.
Definitely will be back.

Disliked There are no showers, but if you bring your own portable shower or don't mind wet wipes, it's absolutely fine. We had a shower tent and an awesome 12V power/shower so we managed a wash down with no problem. 4G is a bit sketchy, but again, if you are one of those people stuck on a phone 24/7, maybe you shouldn't go camping in the first place 😉
The lane to get to the campsite is quite narrow, but there are lay bys.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked The most wonderful peaceful area. Our second stay and will be returning. Nothing to dislike but be prepared for portaloos. No phone signal (bliss) and a great pub a short drive away. No noise, no music and just people relaxing.

Disliked The road is flint and single.track so just be prepared.

Local attractions

A stay at Newhouse Farm puts you in pole position for the numerous festivals at Goodwood Estate, but the campsite is just as close to the fascinating Weald and Downland Living Museum (both 10 minutes’ drive), with its carefully restored historic farmhouses and half-timbered cottages. Chichester (25 minutes) is another cultural hotspot with a Gothic-era cathedral and events at the acclaimed Festival Theatre. Equally unmissable is the verdant West Dean Gardens (15 minutes), with its fabulous display of informal plantings, pretty waterside walks and Victorian glasshouses. There’s a stellar collection of Old Master paintings and ornate suites of rooms filled with priceless treasures at National Trust-owned Petworth House and Park, or you can step further back in time at Fishbourne Roman Palace (both 25 minutes) to see decorative mosaics in a life-size mock-up of an ancient Roman villa. If the kids want their day at the beach, choose between the sand-and-shingle expanse backed by cafés and amusement arcades at Bognor Regis or walk the dogs along the quiet sands at West Wittering (40 minutes).
