Highland cattle a short walk away

  • Secluded wild meadow camping on a working farm in rural West Sussex
  • A 20-minute drive from the South Downs National Park and Petworth
  • Highland cattle and wildlife on site; pub five minutes’ drive away
Hidden away among 60 acres of wildflower meadows, Cattlestone Farm’s field is surrounded by ancient woodland in the glorious West Sussex countryside. At this adults-only site, you're welcome to choose your own pitch. The proud custodians of the fourth-generation farm are Alan and Donna, who produce top-quality hay and have introduced Highland cows and a bull – no doubt you’ll see them grazing in neighbouring fields. Other wildlife that you might spot on site include resident deer, buzzards, tawny owls and red kites – and to preserve this magical natural setting, it’s strictly no large parties here please. Well-behaved dogs, on the other hand, are welcome. Simple facilities include showers and washing-up areas at the toilet block, and a decent wifi connection if you can’t quite give up on the outside world. There are numerous public footpaths and bridleways close by, and the farm is flanked by award-winning vineyards, country pubs (the closest is five minutes by car) and historic villages. There are lots of options for eating out within half an hour’s drive, but if you’d rather curl up around the barbecue, stock up on goodies in handy stores and regular farmers’ markets in Petworth (20 minutes’ drive).

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked We liked the simplicity, the ease of access, the rustic looking but clean facilities, the hot showers, the large level pitches and the peacefulness of the site

Disliked We prefer a permanent building for washing, showering etc to be honest. This was ok but the toilets & showers are very draughty, we think that would not be comfortable in colder weather, ok this time as the weather was warm.

Primitive grass RV campsite

2 cochons, quelques vaches. Nous n’avons vu au un personnel. Pas d’accueil. Que des codes par mail. Peut séduire certains mais pas bous.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Peaceful, easy-going, nicely maintained site with rustic but effective facilities. Level, well-spaced pitches.
Lovely rural location - quite remote so you need a vehicle or good walking boots to reach any pubs or shops.
Good communication prior to arrival - didn't meet anyone whilst there.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We had a wonderful stay at the campsite and would definitely stay here again.

We were able to choose our pitch and we borrowed one of the wagons to get our stuff from the car, it was easily done in 2 goes!

The campsite had a great atmosphere, and it felt very laidback and relaxing. The campsite was quiet after 10 pm which we appreciated.

The facilities were really clean and there never seemed to be a queue for the showers or loos. The water in the showers was hot, and there was plenty of space to hang your clothes and towel. Washing up liquid was provided and we made use of the freezer to keep some freezer blocks cold. There were some loo rolls provided but not always, so don't forget to bring your own!

We also made a visit to the Highland Cows and it was such a great addition to our weekend to go and see them so close-up. We enjoyed a trip to Knepp Estate which is a short drive away and I would recommend this for some dog friendly walks, as well as cafe/shop etc.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We loved it here! It was so peaceful and the pitches were large and private. It was a 20 minute drive to the South Downs which was perfect for us. We thought not being able to park by the car would be inconvenient but actually we much preferred it. It meant that the pitches remained quiet and felt safe. Clean facilities but didn’t use the showers so can’t comment on that. We would definitely return here again.

Disliked Absolutely nothing!

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Clearly some thought has gone into this site which was good to see. It was easy to find & access, good flat & firm land with nicely spaced plots. Smart loos & showers & washing up station too.

The only thing I can suggest is to perhaps refresh the old signage for the footpath/s out the rear of the property (as clearly WSCC don't keep their signage in good order). We're bound to be back.

Local attractions

Hikers can tick off sections of the South Downs Way and walk up to National Trust-owned Devil’s Dyke (35 minutes’ drive) for views across the chalk escarpment of the South Downs National Park (20 minutes). To see a re-wilding initiative successfully at work, walk the permissive trails at Knepp Castle Estate (10 minutes). Exploring historic market towns couldn’t be easier. Petworth has a choice of indie shops in Georgian-era buildings, while Midhurst (35 minutes) has a photogenic mix of architecture from a Norman castle to half-timbered buildings. Stately Arundel (half an hour) is worth a trip for its castle and cathedral, and Chichester (40 minutes) is a clever rainy-day option thanks to the lively schedule at its renowned theatre. Down on the south coast, you’ve also got a choice of destinations. Get in the car and head to the beach at Worthing (25 minutes) for watersports galore and family cycle rides along the promenade. In lively Brighton, you can pick up antique bargains in The Lanes shops or take a guided tour of the colourful and ornate Brighton Pavilion.
